The Pelosis and the Newsoms are two of the most influential families in the San Francisco area. The two families are often linked, as both are involved in business and politics, and some members are even tied by blood and marriage. Do Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi share closer ties?
Gavin Newsom & Nancy Pelosi aren’t related. Nancy Pelosi married the brother of Ron Pelosi, who was once married to Gavin Newsom’s aunt – Belinda Barbara Newsom. Ron and Belinda divorced in 1977, and Nancy and Paul got married in 1963, so for a period of 15 years, Nancy was something like an aunt-by-marriage to Gavin.
That seems very complicated! Let’s take a closer look at the two families and their relationship.
The Newsom Family
Gavin Newsom is an American politician and the 40th governor of California, who also served as the mayor of San Francisco. He was born to William Newsom and Tessa Menzies in 1967.
The whole Newsom family is involved in business and politics in California.
William Newsom was a judge and an excellent businessman. He formed his own ties with the Getty family, which is another influential family in the San Francisco area.
William served as Gordon Getty’s financial advisor and took care of all things related to finances for the Getty family business.
William Newsom had a sister by the name of Belinda Barbara Newsom, who passed away in 2008 at the age of 73. Belinda was a US Representative to the United Nations.
In 1956, Belinda Newsom married Ron V. Pelosi, thus establishing a tie between the two families.
The Pelosi Family
Ron V. Pelosi is an American businessman residing in the state of California. He married Belinda right after he graduated university, which made him Gavin Newsom’s uncle-by-marriage.
In 1977, after over 20 years of marriage, Ron Pelosi and Belinda Newsom got a divorce. Ron proceeded to remarry two years later.
Ron has an equally influential brother, Paul. Paul Pelosi is a businessman who works with real estate, consulting, and investment.
In 1963, Paul Pelosi married a woman by the name of Nancy D’Alesandro, who then became Nancy Pelosi.
Nancy became one of the most influential women in US politics, and she now serves as a Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Nancy Pelosi is second only to the vice president, and she is the only woman in the US to hold such a high position.
Nancy and Paul got married before Ron and Belinda got a divorce, so Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsom must have seen each other at family functions and spent time together.
Nancy could’ve been called Gavin’s aunt-by-marriage; the two are not related by blood.
Now, after Ron Pelosi and Belinda Newsom got a divorce, there are no family ties between Nancy Pelosi and Gavin Newsom.
What other influential families do the Newsoms and the Pelosis have ties with?
There are four influential families in San Francisco: the Newsoms, the Pelosis, the Gettys, and the Browns. The four families are tied by blood, marriage, business, and politics.
Many years back, William Newsom (Gavin’s grandfather) helped Pat Brown run for San Francisco district attorney.
Later, in 1974, Jerry Brown, Pat’s son, became the governor and helped the younger William Newsom (Gavin’s father) kickstart his career as a judge in San Francisco.
William retired in 1995 and went on to work for Gordon Getty. In his own words, “I make my living working for Gordon Getty,” William provided financial and investment advice.
Gavin Newsom and Billy Getty (Gordon’s son) developed a chain of restaurants and wine shops together. Gavin Newsom served as a mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011.
Everything came full circle when he became the governor of California in 2019, with the help of his influential family and friends.
