Mmm, Whatcha Say?
Jason Derulo was born amidst the hustle and bustle of Miramar, Florida. This metropolitan district of Miami has also been home to the likes of Johnny Depp, who grew up here. The urban sprawl proved to be a boon for the would-be musician, and he attended performing arts schools from a young age.
When he was just a child, Jason Derulo began to practice his singing. He was extremely creative, penning songs from as early as just eight years old. His parents nurtured this creative aspect, and encouraged him to work on his talent.
He started writing lyrics for some small time performers, working his way up the chain. He was determined to make a name for himself, collaborating with bigger artists as time went on. By 2006, Derulo was writing lyrics for some huge names, such as Lil Wayne, Sean Kingston and Diddy.
Derulo found his door into the industry in songwriting, but he always wanted to sing. He attended numerous academies and performing arts schools, honing his skills. He wasn’t satisfied just being a great writer, he wanted to sing and dance as well.
Before long, Jason Derulo was discovered by a record label, and signed. He worked extremely hard to make it, and it had paid off. In August of 2009, he released his first ever track – Whatcha Say. This song would come to be iconic, and would remain popular for well over a decade to come.
Although it didn’t initially perform incredibly well, after three months it had hit number one. Following the success of the track, Derulo got his head down once again and began working on a debut album. You can see the music video for Whatcha Say on YouTube, below.
The second signal launched in December, and was titled In My Head. After the early signs of success, Derulo would begin growing exponentially. As a young artist, his future was extremely bright.
Moving Up
Jason Derulo didn’t have a hard upbringing, like some of his peers. He was born into a relatively middle-class home, with a loving, tight-knit family. As soon as he started gravitating towards music, his parents nurtured the aspiration.
As a teenager, Derulo travelled to New York to study music on a professional level. The opportunities afforded to him as a child enabled him to grow and blossom into a fully-fledged artist.
In 2014, Jason Derulo became the number one most played male artist on the radio. He had nine songs reach the top ten, and he was selling tens of thousands of albums and singles. It can’t be doubted that Derulo worked hard to get where he is, moving up from a young writer to a top performer.
His success continued, and by 2020 Jason Derulo had released five full studio albums. He’d embarked on a string of tours, and received ample accolades and awards. He’s taken a string of roles on television, mostly in talent or competition shows.
Ultimately, he’d become a well-known and extremely successful artist. He’d travel a long way from Whatcha Say and would be worth around fifteen million dollars. His considerable skill as a dancer, singer, and performer had certainly served him well in life.
