Rapper Post Malone has become one of the biggest names in music over the last few years. He seemingly came out of nowhere and found major lasting success that has made him a household name to many.
Post Malone was born in New York but moved to Texas when he was nine years old. It was there that Malone went to school and eventually attended and graduated from Grapevine High School in Grapevine, Texas.
After graduating from high school and then trying his hand at college, Malone moved to the west coast where his exhilarating future awaited him.
The Beginning of Post Malone
Post Malone was born as Austin Richard Post on July 4, 1995, in Syracuse, New York.
Post was initially raised by his mother, Nicole Frazier Lake, and his father, Rich Post. Rich was a disc jockey during Post’s early years and introduced his son to many different musical genres such as hip-hop, rock, country, and more.
Malone became interested in music at a young age, mostly because of his father’s career and love of many genres. As he got older, he would find himself drawn to the idea of learning instruments and even writing music himself.
When he was still a child, Malone’s parents divorced and his father married Post’s stepmother, Jodie Prost. At the age of nine, Post, his father, and stepmother moved from New York to Texas.
Post Malone in High School
Malone’s family found a new home in Grapevine, Texas which was a radical change from their time spent in New York. The group relocated because Post’s father landed a job managing concessions for the Dallas Cowboys football team.
A few years later, Post was enrolled at the local high school, Grapevine High School. Grapevine is a rather popular school that teaches over 2,000 students annually.
Post spent his time studying and working as well. He got a job as a teenager at the local fast-food establishment Chicken Express.
Malone was also spending his time getting more into music. At the age of 16, Post created his first mixtape titled Young and After Them Riches.
Though there has been some speculation about how the rapper came up with his stage name, Post said he simply chose “Malone” thanks to a random rap name generator he found online.
Malone shared his music with his classmates, who were all seemingly impressed. They thought he was so talented that they voted him “Most Likely to Become Famous” during his senior year.
Malone began to learn how to play the guitar after an interest in the video game Guitar Hero and even auditioned to join the rock band Crown the Empire but was ultimately rejected from that gig when his guitar strings broke during his audition.
Post graduated from Grapevine High School in 2013. Due to the success of his first mixtape, he felt like he had a chance at creating a career in music for himself.
A Move to L.A.
Post attended Tarrant County College in Texas for a while after high school graduation. However, he didn’t stay there long and instead took the next steps for a music career.
With his friend Jason Probst, Post took his talents out west when he moved to Los Angeles in hopes of finding his fortune.
Probst, Malone, and a few other artists then created the group BLCKVRD and began to create music. In August 2015, Post released his song “White Inversion” which quickly began to make the rounds online.
The song’s video received more than one million views within a month and he quickly signed with Republic Records. After working with Kanye West at a birthday party for Kylie Jenner, Post began to create relationships with other musicians like Young Thug, 50 Cent, and Justin Bieber.
Just one year later, Post’s first album “Stoney” impressively debuted at number six on the US Billboard charts. In 2017, his career skyrocketed to new heights when his song “Rockstar” became a massive hit, remaining number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks.
Giving Back to Grapevine
Although Post Malone has come a long way from his days in North Texas, he still doesn’t forget his roots and the people who helped make him a success.
In December 2020, Malone sent his new line of Croc shoes to the students and staff of Grapevine High School. The special edition shoes, which sold out within hours of being available, were delivered to all the students and employees of his alma mater.
