As one of the smartest and most versatile artists out there, many people have wondered if Post Malone is “book smart” too. Did he go to college?
Yes, Post Malone went to Tarrant County College—but only for a few months. Fortunately for fans around the world, Post quickly realized that college wasn’t for him and decided to pursue music instead.
Like many people, Post Malone wanted to please his parents by following the traditional college education route. But like many musicians, his passion for singing and rapping took over and Post never finished college.
Post Malone: High School
Post Malone, born Austin Richard Post, went to high school in Grapevine, Texas. He was born in Syracuse, New York but his father ended up taking a job with the Dallas Cowboys when Post was ten.
It was around this time that Post started to teach himself how to play guitar. He was initially inspired by the Guitar Hero music video and was quickly able to not only beat the game, but also learn some pretty amazing guitar playing skills.
Music became everything for Post during that time. He loved a variety of musical styles—including hip-hop, country, rock & roll, and emo. He even auditioned for a heavy metal band in 2010. He was even known to commonly bring his guitar to class!
In fact, it was in high school that Post started making music. He released his first mixtape when he was just sixteen and, as a result, was voted the “Most Likely to Become Famous” by his class.
Post Malone: College
After graduating high school in 2013, Post Malone worked at a Chicken Express fast food restaurant. He enrolled in college at Tarrant County College, but dropped out after just a short time.
Post really wanted to impress his parents and they both wanted him to go to college. After just a few months, he ended up telling them that college wasn’t for him and he was going to go to LA instead. His dad fully supported him, but his mom was a bit hesitant about the whole thing.
Post Malone: Post-College
After quickly deciding that he didn’t want to waste his time with college, Post joined one of his best friends, Jason Probst. Probst had a popular Minecraft YouTube channel and let Post Malone join him in his LA house. At one point Post was even sleeping in a closet and freeloading on things like rent and food.
But things quickly changed for Post—and we mean quickly. He met the producer duo FKi and wrote the hit song “White Iverson” in just two days. He produced it on SoundCloud and it blew up overnight. In just six months, a record deal was signed with Republic Records.
College Dropout
For some people, college is an appropriate pathway to success. For others, however, college can be considered a waste of time. I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty glad that Post made the decision to leave college when he did—the world got a pretty talented rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor instead.
