Mila Kunis speaks Russian fluently because she grew up in the Soviet Union. Does she have a grasp of any other language – such as Spanish?
There’s no evidence that Mila Kunis speaks Spanish. Her husband Ashton Kutcher shared a video singing the Spanish nursery rhyme “La Vaca Lola” with Kunis, but it’s unclear if she can hold a conversation in this language.
Stick around to learn more about Kunis’ language skills and her connection to Spanish.
Mila’s Language Skills
Mila Kunis is an American citizen, but she was raised in the Soviet Union. She moved to Los Angeles at age seven, and Russian was the only language she could speak at the time.
Kunis had a hard time adjusting to new surroundings, but learning English came easily to her. It took her about a year to become nearly fluent in this language, but it’s a common misconception that she learned it by watching The Price Is Right.
“I made a statement when I was 14 that is going to haunt me the rest of my life about how I used to watch The Price Is Right when I was learning English. It just happened to be on TV before I went to school,” Kunis told Parade.
The Black Swan star still speaks Russian to her parents and grandparents, and she wants her children to learn her native language. She also demonstrated her speaking skills in several interviews while promoting her movies in Russia.
Most notably, Kunis used her native tongue during a Moscow press conference for Friends with Benefits in 2011. She demonstrated her bilingual skills after a reporter asked her co-star Justin Timberlake why he’s given up music for acting and jumped to his defense in fluent Russian.
Contrary to popular belief, Kunis wasn’t actually born in Russia – her hometown of Chernivtsi is located on the territory of today’s Ukraine. She only visited it once since moving to the US but wasn’t allowed to enter her childhood home.
Multilingual Children
Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher tied the knot in 2015, and they’re proud parents of two children – daughter Wyatt Isabelle born in 2014, and son Dimitri Portwood born in 2016.
Kunis wanted to stay true to her Soviet roots by teaching her children Russian, and her husband was supportive of this decision. Kutcher started taking Russian lessons with a private tutor months before their daughter was born so he could talk to the baby in this language.
He also wanted to be able to communicate with Kunis’ grandparents, who only speak Russian. Kutcher told Seth Meyers that he feared Kunis’ family didn’t like him because “everything sounds really aggressive” when you don’t understand their language.
He also revealed that their daughter Wyatt Isabelle was already multilingual by the age of two. In addition to being able to speak and understand English and Spanish, she also had a basic grasp of Russian but struggled to speak it on her own.
Singing in Spanish
It’s unclear if Mila Kunis can speak Spanish because we’ve never heard her do it before – but at least she can sing it. Back in 2019, Kutcher shared a video that shows them singing the popular Spanish nursery rhyme “La Vaca Loca” to their kids.
It’s a brief song, so it’s impossible to determine if she knows Spanish or how well based on this video alone. There are other indications that she might know some Spanish, but she’s yet to publicly confirm it and prove her skills.
Mila Kunis spent most of her life in Los Angeles, and Spanish happens to be a wildly spoken language in this city. Her daughter can speak Spanish, according to Kutcher, so it’s possible that her parents know the basics, as well.
Kunis said she would be a good secret agent while promoting The Spy Who Dumped Me because she knows three languages.
She never explicitly said Spanish was one of them, so we’ll probably have to wait until she defends one of her co-stars in this language to see if she can speak it.
