If you ever paid close attention to Mila Kunis’ eyes, you’ve probably noticed that they differ in color. Did the famous actress achieve this look by wearing colorful contact lenses?
Mila Kunis doesn’t wear contact lenses – at least not in the traditional sense of the word. She was partially blind while suffering from chronic iritis, and a new glass lens was inserted into one of her eyes during the surgery.
Mila Kunis’ Heterochromia
Mila Kunis has a rare condition called heterochromia, which basically means that she has eyes of a different color. This condition may be inherited, but it’s acquired in her case because it was caused by her medical struggles.
In an interview with Cosmopolitan from 2011, Kunis revealed that she was “blind in one eye for many years.” This issue was caused by chronic iritis, an inflammation of the iris, and she eventually had surgery that saved her vision.
Kunis also told Cosmopolitan that “they cut [her eye] open and dropped a new lens in there”, so she technically wears some sort of a lens – just not the kind that we usually think of when someone mentions the term “contact lenses”.
The Black Swan star also discussed this medical procedure with Marie Claire, and said that she has a “glass lens”. Her repaired eye changed in color afterward, but Kunis said it’s “not that big a deal”. Her fans seem to agree and love her even more for it.
Heterochromia in Hollywood
Mila Kunis’ eyes are quite unique since her left eye is green, while the right one is brown. She’s one of Hollywood’s biggest stars with heterochromia, but not the only one with this condition.
Kate Bosworth (Superman Returns), Jane Seymour (Live and Let Die), and Alice Eve (Before We Go) also have complete heterochromia which means their irises differ in color. Several other stars live with this condition, but it manifests in a different way.
Kunis’ Third Person co-star Olivia Wilde comes to mind because she has central heterochromia. The inner rings of her irises spike a different color from the outer, but this is barely noticeable unless you pay extra-close attention.
What About Glasses?
It’s been years since Mila Kunis’ iritis surgery and her eyesight is much better than it was before, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. The Black Swan star may not wear contacts to change the color of her eyes, but she’s been spotted with glasses on several occasions.
Back in 2017, Kunis was caught on camera shopping in Los Angeles with a pair of black-rimmed specs. She was also spotted wearing glasses in 2019 while picking up some coffee and running errands in her neighborhood.
Kunis switched between wearing and not wearing glasses during these outings, so it’s difficult to determine if she really needs them or not. She also wore glasses in the romantic comedy Friends with Benefits, but only in a couple of scenes.
A-List Fans of Contacts
Kunis’ unusual eye color is completely natural, but many well-known celebrities use colored contact lenses to change their physical appearance.
Kylie Jenner is one of the biggest A-list fans of this trend, and she constantly uses colored lenses to alter her look. Her eyes are naturally brown, but they appeared blue in many of her pictures because the beauty mogul was wearing Solotica contact lenses.
Kylie isn’t the only member of the Jenner-Kardashian family who adores colorful contacts – her sister Kendall gave this trend her seal of approval, as well. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were also both spotted with dramatic contact lenses that completely changed their look.
Kardashian’s friend Paris Hilton is another huge fan of blue colored contacts. She wears them so often that most people aren’t even aware that her eyes are actually brown. Ivanka Trump is another famous heiress who’s constantly rocking colored lenses and it’s a true rarity to see her with her natural eye color.
