The Road to Fame
Now, Post Malone has millions of dedicated fans worldwide who have taken to Twitter with their restlessness about Malone releasing a new album. One Twitter user joked, “We made Post Malone way too famous, he hardly releases any music now,” while another posed the question, “Post Malone is famous but where is pre-malone and present-malone?”
Malone had recorded songs by himself, but after moving to LA when he was 18, he and some friends formed the group BLCKVRD and began recording songs, all of which have been taken down as the artists broke off from the group and had fresh starts.
While in LA, Malone met the production team FKi who helped him record his debut single, “White Iverson.” The track was then released on SoundCloud and got one million plays within three weeks.
Two months after that, he released his second single, “Too Young” also on SoundCloud before he signed a recording contract with Republic Records. His debut album, Stoney, was released in 2016, and even though it was his first album, he already had famous music artists featured on many of the tracks, like Justin Bieber, Kehlani, 2 Chainz, and Quavo.
From there, Malone only went up, but where did he start, and how did he get into music in the first place?
Post Malone’s Background
Before he went by Post Malone, Austin Post was born in Syracuse, New York in 1995 on Independence Day, the 4th of July. His interest in music began when he was very young, as his father used to be a DJ and introduced him to many different music genres.
In a radio station interview in 2015, Malone said, “My dad was always playing music. Not like playing music, but listening to music. And he put me on everything… Folk and funk and rap.”
“I moved to Dallas and I started making music. So, that’s really it. And from then on I just started making what I like. Playing guitar, and writing my own songs. And just making music,” he finished.
Post Malone knew he loved music but was not always sure of which form of it he wanted to focus on. Malone actually played guitar for a heavy metal band called Ashley’s Arrival which covered famous metal songs, after getting into the guitar from playing the game Guitar Hero.
In 2010, he auditioned to be the guitarist for the metalcore band Crown the Empire, but during his audition, one of his guitar strings broke and he didn’t end up getting into the band. Though he didn’t continue on that path, heavy metal was the first way he got into professional music.
After that, he became more interested in softer rock and hip hop and began experimenting with making beats on FL Studio. As a high schooler living in Grapevine, Texas, he created his first mixtape using Audacity at 16 years old, called Young and After Them Riches, about wanting to become famous.
As a senior in high school, his classmates voted him “Most Likely to Become Famous,” and after moving to LA, he did just that.
