Being a Youtube viewer without any AdBlock in the first half of 2015, you’d have found yourself exposed to the birth of a meme, Tai Lopez in his garage with his new Lamborghini. Just how did Lopez end up with all that money?
Tai Lopez is an entrepreneurial marketing expert and social media influencer who made his money through online courses. One of the first courses he sold was the 67 Steps, a self-help guide to becoming wealthy.
Without knowing him personally, Lopez and his apparent riches seem to have just appeared out of thin air. Prior to his mass-advertisement campaign on Youtube, Lopez was relatively unheard of.
It was his 67 Steps program that established him as a big name and likely made him the majority of his wealth initially.
Taking Advice From Wealthy Mentors
According to Lopez, building yourself a life that is complete with wealth and happiness is achievable through his 67 Steps, steps that one could assume are informed by his own beliefs and experiences. One of those beliefs is the importance of a mentor figure.
This was a train of thought that was first inspired by correspondence with his grandfather, a scientist. Whilst seeking some wisdom as a teenager about how to approach the idea of building his wealth, his grandfather told him that he would be lucky to find even a handful of people in his life that would point him in the right direction.
Even beyond a mentor that you personally know and can communicate with, one of Lopez’s famous recommendations in this regard is that you should be reading “a book a day”, not from cover to cover, but simply extracting the most useful pieces of information after a quick skim.
The kind of material that he believes is ideal for this kind of strategy is books written by other successful people, hopefully gleaning useful truths from those who have conquered their industries or the world of business.
Where Did His Wealth Come From?
Lopez wasn’t just miraculously wealthy out of nowhere, the entrepreneur apparently started off with barely a hundred dollars to his name, living in his mother’s house. It’s a stark contrast from the image of the man in front of a brand new Lambo that we see in his videos.
So how did he become so wealthy? How did he become wealthy enough to be the man to give the world the steps to attaining the same goals?
This is where the dividing line between believers and detractors begins on the Tai Lopez issue. Back when Lopez first ran his advertisement campaign on Youtube, there were criticisms that the lifestyle he was portraying was all smoke and mirrors. It’s worth noting that there’s no evidence either way on this issue.
The criticism was in part due to the way that Lopez positioned himself and his business model as being a self-made millionaire with all the answers, one of many self-help guru’s and speakers that the internet has helped to popularize with the variety of platforms available to them.
Regardless, whether or not there’s any reality or substance behind the veneer of wealth had no influence on the success of the ad campaign and the self-help program that Lopez was offering.
The 67 Steps
If he hadn’t been wealthy before, then he certainly was now. The advertisements on Youtube, despite seeming a little quirky and off-beat to the point that they generated one of the most memorable memes of 2015, were a success in getting his business out there.
Although there were the previously mentioned rumors of his image being fake, many who paid for the courses he was offering swore by the efficacy. Even independent reviews seemed to paint a picture of a course that was at least somewhat useful, even if not the game-changer that Lopez claimed it to be.
So, whether or not he started out with the wealth, or if he earned it from the subsequent fame acquired by his internet cult status, he’s certainly wealthy now.
Although we don’t know for sure how he actually made his money BEFORE his 67 Steps campaign, it’s clear that it’s what brought him to the millionaire status that he now currently enjoys, utilizing a combination of smart marketing and good timing.
