Jonah Hill is multi-talented showing his prowess in screen writing, acting, directing, and comedy. He is a highly sought after actor. His claim to fame largely started with ‘Superbad’. So, one has to wonder, exactly how much did Jonah Hill get paid for ‘Superbad’?
It is unknown how much Jonah Hill was paid for ‘Superbad’. What we do know is that he took a monster pay cut for ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’ and was happy to do it.
Jonah Hill is a hugh Martin Scorsese fan. He would have been happy to sell his house and give the proceeds to work with his idol. Jonah Hill jumped at the opportunity. By the time ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’ was being cast, Hill had already started making a name for himself and it all started with ‘Superbad’.
The Story of ‘Superbad’
‘Superbad’ was Jonah Hill’s first leading role and what a movie to start your road to fame. The movie is said to be one of the best teen movies and has reached iconic status.
The film had a modest $20 million dollar budget and ended up earning about $170 million at the box office. It was not only Hill’s debut but co-writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg wrote the box office hit and were introducing their talent.
The interesting thing about the movie is a lot of it was taken from real-life situations in Rogen’s and Goldberg’s life growing up.
Another interesting fact is that Rogen didn’t want to cast Hill for the part, at first. The two started writing the story in their teens and aged-out of the parts. The funny thing here is that Hill is just a year or so younger than Rogen. Hill convinced Rogen that he could play the part without fail and the rest is history.
Jonah was ecstatic to the opportunities that he capitalized on to earn him a part in ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’.
The Story of ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’
We know that Hill took a drastic pay cut to work with his idol, but what is the story surrounding the movie. ‘The Wolf of Wallstreet’ has been shrouded in controversy and continues to be today although it was released back in 2013.
One of the surprising occurrences was Hill having to go to the hospital after filming. Apparently, all of the fake cocaine that he had to ingest during filming attacked his health. His exact words were:
“I did so much fake cocaine in Wolf of Wall Street I got bronchitis for three weeks and had to be hospitalized. It’s vitamin powder, but it doesn’t matter, because if you ingest that much matter into your lungs, you’ll get very sick, and we were just literally doing fake coke for, like, seven months, every day. I never had more vitamin D in my entire life. I could have lifted a car over my ***** head!”
It was fairly surprising to the public that this could occur. This incident has caused the prop masters to take another look at things regarding amounts and safety. Despite the small hiccup, the actor stands by the statement that he would have done anything to work with Scorsese.
Deeper Into Hill
After that, Jonah went on to create Mid90s which Scorsese actually helped him with. He tweeted about its upcoming release.
Mid90s is a coming of age story and officially Hill’s directorial debut. It took in $9.3 million at the box office. Not quite ‘Superbad’ but definitely a notable performance.
Throughout his years as an entertainer, he is starred in 36 feature films and a dozen television series. Jonah can go from a comedy bro-movie to serious roles which shows a diverse, talented actor. Jonah recently expressed that he no longer wanted to be in bro-movies:
“I love those films, but I also think that if you look back at those films, a lot of what they’re showing is major bro comedy, and bro masculinity.”
Hill has expressed a desire to not emulate masculinity which is the basis of a lot of his works in the past. He is reconciling with issues that films portray that he is not entirely on board with, but simply to recognize that it exists and that it shouldn’t be celebrated.
From a highly accomplished actor to a successful director, Jonah Hill has grown into the role of being a famous icon and seems to realize the responsibilities and hardships that come with that role.
