Celebrities continue using their influence to raise awareness on issues that they personally identify with. One of the actionable steps they take in this direction is to embody their cause–in other words, to walk the talk. ASAP Rocky is one such celebrity who practices this.
ASAP Rocky is a vegan and is unashamed about it.
We can’t all be vegetarians as everybody has different nutritional needs. But here’s what we know about one of our favorite rappers’ vegan lifestyle, and why he made that shift in his diet.
Why is ASAP Rocky vegan?
ASAP Rocky belonged to the group of people who used to eat chicken burgers, wings, nuggets, and the like. In other words, he used to be like many of us, diet-wise.
But all of that changed around 2011 to 2012 when he discovered the process involved in getting the meat out of poultry.
When people want to get chicken meat, they have to put it in hot boiling water, cut its head off, and pluck out all the feathers. The process must have disgusted ASAP Rocky because he decided never to eat any form of animal meat. He felt it was like torture which may not be far from the truth.
By 2012, he was pescatarian; by 2015, he shifted to a vegan diet.
ASAP Rocky first decided to be a vegan because he didn’t like the gruesome process of getting the meat. Then it became a personal cause to support the fight against climate change.
How does ASAP Rocky get protein as a vegetarian?
There are many forms of protein that don’t stem from meat and animal produce. Eggs, oatmeal, green vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc., are a few ways to get protein when you are on a strictly plant-based diet.
ASAP Rocky has a strict plant-based policy and gets all the protein he needs from it. He also claimed that he doesn’t eat meat whenever he’s at a Thanksgiving dinner with his family, which is typically a show-stopper for every other person around.
ASAP Rocky is from a family that eats beef, chicken, and all forms of meat, so it does take a lot of discipline not to give in.
Which of ASAP Rocky’s songs are inspired by his vegan diet?
In July 2019, ASAP Rocky was arrested for assaulting a man in Sweden. Swedish police officers said that he punched and kicked the man.
Although the rapper claimed to act in self-defense, he was found guilty and spent three weeks in detention. ASAP Rocky was released after paying a fine.
After leaving the cell, he released a song, “Babushka Boi.” According to some sources, the song wasn’t inspired by his time in jail because the music video was ready before the rapper’s arrest.
However, many parts of the song talked about his vegan diet. For example, “I ain’t ducking bullets either. Sh*t, I ain’t duck sauce since I became a vegan.”
The song was more of a public confession and acceptance of his vegan lifestyle. However, fans believed the song was inspired by the scars on his face, which he got when he was butted in the face with a gun.
Which musicians are vegans?
Apart from ASAP Rocky, many artists have also gone vegan. Some familiar names include: Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Travis Barker, Leona Lewis, Sia, Lizzo, Ellie Goulding, and Erykah Badu, etc.
The list is getting longer, and we can go over it with other notable celebs…in another post.
Is Rihanna vegan?
Rihanna is a musician, beauty entrepreneur and one of the richest black women in the world. She grew in Barbados, and came to the limelight in 2005. The singer runs a beauty brand called Fenty and is one of the most admired in the beauty industry.
ASAP Rocky and Rihanna made their relationship public in 2022 and has since garnered more fans rooting for them. However, both musicians don’t have the same standards in terms of diet.
ASAP is an ardent vegan while his beau, Rihanna, is not. Her diet includes a healthy amount of animal produce. Rihanna’s chef in 2013 even claimed that the reason the singer employed her was because of her signature curry chicken dish.
Rihanna may not follow a vegan diet, but she’s made conscious choices in fashion. She was awarded by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) with a Compassion in Fashion award for releasing a faux-leather line with her fashion brand, Fenty.
PETA, along with some critics on social media, have called on the singer to ditch animal fur from some of her outfits. She has yet to heed, but it looks like she’s on her way to it.
