Who is Jonah Hill?
Jonah Hill was born in Los Angeles in 1983. His mother worked as a stylist and costume designer.
His father was the accountant for the internationally famous band, Guns N’ Roses. Hill plays down this connection however, joking, “It wasn’t like rock stars and shit. Dealing with finances is not really that interesting.”
Hill’s interest in TV began early in life when he realized that the animated show ‘The Simpsons’ was made by creatives in the TV industry. “I was like: ‘I can’t believe that’s a job,” he recalls.
He began an interest in screenwriting and started to write content based on ‘The Simpsons’ episodes, though these remained private. “I don’t think they’re going to win any Emmys,” he says of the work.
As a child, his comedy developed as a technique to be accepted. He began a friendship with a group of skateboarders when he was aged 11, though was conscious that he was different from them.
“Acceptance wasn’t easy,” he explains. “I would walk in there at 11 and get made fun of for being Jewish – it’s insane…My currency was humor.”
Coincidentally, Hill attended school alongside the son of actor Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman witnessed Hill making prank calls and was impressed with his improvisation.
This would become a formative moment in Hill’s career, as Hoffman suggested he audition for a role in the movie ‘I Heart Huckabees’.
Career
Hill won the role in ‘I Heart Huckabees’ and in 2004, made his debut in the movie.
He soon appeared in ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’, leading to a role in ‘Grandma’s Boy’. In 2007, he became the star of the movie ‘Superbad’ alongside Michael Cera.
Becoming an increasingly recognizable face in Hollywood, he was given the opportunity to voice a character in ‘The Simpsons’, the show he enjoyed as a child and credits as an inspiration.
Notable movies that Hill has starred in include ‘War Dogs’, ‘21 Jump Street’, ‘Moneyball’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ His work has been recognized with award nominations from the Golden Globes and Oscars.
His work does not only include acting roles, with the star having branched out into writing and directing. The first movie he directed, ‘Mid90s’, premiered in 2018 and tells the familiar story of a young boy trying to find himself while spending time with a group of older skateboarding friends.
He accepts that his role as an actor has helped him on his journey to becoming a director. “Acting gets you a front-row seat to every department,” he says.
Diet
In 2018, Hill appeared on ‘The Ellen Degeneres Show’ and talked about his recent weight loss. He reflected on his fluctuating weight and struggles to be accepted as a child.
“I’m under construction like we all are, we’re all just trying to figure it out,” he says.
He spoke to ABC News about his weight loss, explaining that he’d adjusted his diet. “I wish there was some crazy thing that I did, like a pill or a genie or something, but I went to see a nutritionist, and he told me what to eat to change my habits and stuff.”
It was reported that following an Omega-3 rich diet, including sushi, was responsible for his weight loss.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Hill recalls an occasion where he accidentally emailed his food diary to the music icon Drake. “I wrote down yogurt, salad, chicken,” he says while explaining the comedy story.
It was reported in 2013 that in order to cut carbs from his diet, the actor was consuming more meat, further suggesting that he does not follow a vegan diet.
