Katherine Jenkins is a popular singer who typically performs opera and hymns. In 2012, she performed with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Orchestra at Temple Square. This led many of her fans to question whether or not she is Mormon.
Though Katherine Jenkins performed with a Mormon choir, she is, in fact, thought to be Christian. She has never outwardly said what religion she follows but has alluded to Christianity in various interviews before. She also performs at venues all over the world, so it is not unusual for her to perform with a Mormon choir.
Continue reading to find out more about Mormonism and about Katherine Jenkins religious background.
Mormonism
Mormonism was started by Joseph Smith in the 1820s. He published a religious text, called The Book of Mormon.
The Book of Mormon is said to be another testament of Jesus Christ and is based on stories from the past Indigenous people of the Americas relationship with God.
Those who follow the religion are called Mormons and they follow Mormonism. Mormonism is a sect of Christianity as they believe in God and Jesus Christ.
The main difference between the religions though is that Christians believe God is all-encompassing, meaning he is the father, the son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit.
Mormons believe that God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are all different people. Mormons also have additional scriptures to the bible, namely the book of Mormon.
In the world, there are 15 million Mormons and Katherine Jenkins is not one of them. On the other hand, there are 2.3 billion Christians in the world.
Though many people believed Katherine Jenkins was Mormon because she performed at a Mormon ceremony with the choir, Non-Mormons are welcome to attend weekly services and meetings in chapels and temples.
So, Katherine Jenkins is not Mormon, she was just a guest of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Orchestra at Temple Square.
Katherine Jenkin’s Religious Background
Katherine Jenkins has never outwardly said that she is Christian, but there is evidence that she is.
Firstly, Katherine Jenkins attended the Alderman Davies Church in Wales Primary School. You must be Christian to attend a Christian school. This shows that Jenkins was raised Christian.
Further, in interviews when she talks about her father that passed away, she references her religious beliefs.
Notably, she said, “My faith has always been important to me, but after Dad died I turned my back on the church for a while.”
As she grew up in Wales and attended the Church in Wales when she was younger, that is likely the church she was talking about.
Further, Jenkins said: “I believe in heaven. I believe my dad is somewhere doing something nice.”
As her father died when she was only 15, she seems to find solace in her religion and faith. Believing in heaven is evidence that she is Christian as Mormons don’t believe in heaven.
Mormons believe in a different planet, called Kolob that is close to God. This is where Mormons believe they go in their afterlife.
While it is their version of heaven, it is not referred to as such. So when Katherine Jenkins says she believes her father is in heaven, she is not talking about a Mormon belief.
People only started to question whether or not Katherine Jenkins was Mormon when she performed with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Orchestra, but she has done many performances in many venues before.
She has even sung at Westminster Cathedral, years before that in 2003 in honor of Pope John Paul II’s silver jubilee (his 25th year as Pope)
Katherine Jenkins is a well-known and honored singer, it is not surprising that she has sung at Cathedrals and Temples, but where she performs is not a reflection of her religious beliefs as she is Christian, not Mormon.
