Romain Bonnet Is a French Pastry Chef
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight in August of 2020, Mary Fitzgerald recalled that the way she met Romain Bonnet was through his initial job in the United States. That job was as a pastry chef.
Bonnet had been working as a pastry chef in Paris before taking a job offer to work in the United States. So he immigrated from France to make delicious French pastries for Americans.
However, he wasn’t making any money as a pastry chef in the US so he ended up being hired by Jason Oppenheim to work as a Project Manager for Oppenheim Group. It’s somewhat unclear if he was dating Mary Fitzgerald before or after he landed the role as a Project Manager.
When fans started asking Bonnet if he had been a French Pastry Chef, he actually posted to his Instagram to confirm it was true. He posted a photo of one of the cakes he had made as a chef.
Mary Fitzgerald has elaborated on the story behind her and Romain’s first meeting to Woman’s Health Magazine. She said that she was actually Romain’s real estate agent when he was looking for a home.
She also told WH that his modeling agency encouraged him to move to LA because of all of the work that was available in the area compared to where he had been living previously. Other than that, not much else is known about his life pre- Los Angeles and in France.

Bonnet & Fitzgerald’s Marriage Controversy
It was in June of 2017, that Bonnet and Fitzgerald started dating which was well before the premiere of the reality TV show that features them both. They also got married before Selling Sunset ever premiered, which caused a huge stir among show fans.
TMZ broke the news that Romain Bonnet and Mary Fitzgerald had actually been married for four months before the show even started filming. The tabloid journalism site was able to get its hands on the marriage certificate for the two which was dated March 9, 2018.
Many fans felt betrayed because they were completely misled by the relationship between Bonnet and Fitzgerald. Selling Sunset had been scrutinized before because many people accused the show of being scripted even though it was supposed to be a reality show.
When the news broke about Romain and Mary, it was confirmed that these accusations were actually true. Many fans were quick to point out that in the first season, Romain proposed to Mary while the two lay in bed one morning.
Another pain point for viewers was the fact that the entirety of season two revolved around the couple’s wedding.
At one point, Mary Fitzgerald even paused the wedding while in the middle of getting ready to sell a house. The house she sold was the one that they were being married at as it happened to be one of her listings.
After finding out that Bonnet and Fitzgerald were already married, many people were quick to further criticize the show for being scripted. It also led some media outlets to criticize the entire relationship between Bonnet and Fitzgerald leaving some wondering if the entire relationship was a sham.
Either way, the couple still appears to be happily married and during season three of Selling Sunset, they only ran into one problem as a couple. That problem was when Mary found out that there had been girls in Romain’s hotel room during his bachelor party in Las Vegas.
Initially left wondering if she could trust her husband, Fitzgerald has since said that she knows he 100% would never cheat on her and that all is good in paradise.
