Avani Gregg
Avani Gregg was born on November 23, 2002, in Indiana, the daughter of an African American father and a mother with Indian and Mongolian heritage. She is the middle sister of three, with Shanti also a social media influencer who sometimes appears in videos with Avani.
She has mentioned that her entire family is active on TikTok but that the other members mostly use their accounts to interact with each other.
Avani competed in gymnastics as a child, training as a level 10 gymnast but the wear and tear led to her developing a stress fracture in her back. Despite doctor’s advice to give up gymnastics, Avani continued competing and this led to greater damage, significant enough to make her retire from the sport completely.
One of her passions is makeup, which would later become the key to her internet fame. When asked who her dream celebrity would be to work with, Gregg answered that she would most like to work on Billie Eilish.
TikTok
Gregg started posting on social media, with most of her videos focusing on makeup and other beauty tips. In 2019, she uploaded a video of herself applying Harley Quinn-style clown makeup.
The video went viral and earned her the nickname “Clown Girl”, leading to Avani’s TikTok following growing at an amazingly rapid pace. Gregg gained 3 million followers in just a couple of weeks. As of writing, she has more than 23 million followers on TikTok alone.
Gregg’s soaring popularity saw her collaborating with other top influencers such as James Charles. She has said that she didn’t really like being known as the “Clown Girl” but appreciates that the TikTok post was responsible for helping her social media following grow immensely.
At the 2019 Shorty Awards, dedicated to internet personalities, Avani was nominated in the category of Best TikToker, which she went on to win. The Shorty Awards explained her win as being for her “combination of makeup skills and moody clown skits” propelling her to viral celebrity status.
In addition to her TikTok and other social media videos, Gregg made her acting debut in season 6 of the web series “Chicken Girls”, playing Gemma, captain of the high school cheer squad.
Hype House
In December 2019, a number of TikTok’s most popular stars announced the formation of Hype House, a collective of content creators based at a mansion in a gated Los Angeles community. There were 19 members when the group was created, with four of these living at the Hype House full time while the others are free to stay at the mansion whenever they’re in LA.
Hype House wasn’t the first content house, also known as “collab houses”, with numerous others having popped up in the five years before its formation. These included the “Vlog Squad” purchasing a base in Studio City, while Jake and Logan Paul and their “Youtuber collective” rented a home in West Hollywood.
The first such house dedicated to TikTok, Hype House provided a base for the young stars to collaborate on videos (and provide a stunning backdrop). Although she is a member, Avani Gregg does not live in the Hype House full time and continued to live with her family, saying that she probably wouldn’t do her homework if she moved in with her fellow influencers.
