Does Luke Bryan Write His Own Songs?

by Lisa Ellis
2020/10/06

American country singer and American Idol judge Luke Bryan has topped the country charts countless times. With so many hit songs, fans wonder whether he penned them all himself.

Luke Bryan has written most of his songs, but not all of them. Some of his chart-topping hits were written by other people. Do I, which arguably put him on the map for country music, was co-written with Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood. Similarly, Luke Bryan has also written his own songs popularized by other musicians, such as Good Directions which was recorded by Billy Currington.

Bryan has a host of songs under his belt. Learn more below about which ones he wrote, and which he didn’t.

Luke Bryan’s Discography

Bryan was born in Georgia, but later moved to Nashville to pursue a career in country music, shortly after his older brother was killed in a tragic car accident.

After graduating from college, he pursued a career in songwriting before eventually making his own music.

Where Did Luke Bryan Grow Up?

What Was Luke Bryan’s First Song?

In his debut album I’ll Stay Me, Bryan co-wrote 10 of the 11 tracks. He did not participate in the writing of his fourth track Pray About Everything.

He co-wrote the other tracks with different artists, most being with his producer Jeff Stevens.

Bryan’s debut single All My Friends Say was also co-written by Stevens and reached number 5 on the Hot Country Songs Chart.

The singer co-wrote his successful hit Do I with Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley, who were members of the American country band Lady A.

The song reached number 2 on the Hot Country Songs and Billboard Country Airplay charts, and sold over a million copies in America, becoming a 2 times platinum while also reaching 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

On Bryan’s second studio album Doin’ My Thing, he co-wrote all but one of the songs (which was a cover of One Republic’s Apologize) himself, with various artists.

Several of his chart-topping number 1 songs, such as Rain Is A Good Thing, and Someone Else Calling You Baby, are co-written by him and other country singers such as Dallas Davidson, or his producer Jeff Stevens.

He wrote most songs on his third studio album titled Tailgates & Tanlines, but some were written by other artists and recorded by Bryan.

In his fourth album Crash My Party, Bryan only wrote 2 of the 13 songs (although he wrote 2 more on the deluxe edition featuring 17 songs).

There is a similar trend with Bryan’s later work, being that he co-writes most songs on his albums with the exception of a few.

However, Luke Bryan also wrote songs for other musicians to record.

The song Good Directions was recorded by American country artist Billy Currington and reached number 1 on the U.S Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

It is lesser-known that the song was co-written by Luke Bryan along with Rachel Thibodeau.

Bryan’s Commercial Success

Luke Bryan’s hit song Most People Are Good was part of his sixth studio album titled What Makes You Country.

It was released in 2017, and charted very well, reaching number 1 on the US Country Airplay Chart. This was his 19th song to do so – the singer has often been hailed as a king of country music.

Bryan did not write or produce the song – it was written by Josh Kear, Ed Hill, and David Frasier, Ed Hill.

Regardless of whether Bryan writes all of his songs, he is a talented singer. His talent is recognized by the music community, and he has won several awards.

In 2019, he won the Entertainer of the Year award from both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Luke Bryan started out as a songwriter, and still has active participation in his creative process.
