Tattoos
In the music video for ‘Die Another Day’, the soundtrack to the 2002 Bond movie, Madonna portrays a prisoner and has clear Hebrew letters emblazoned across her shoulder. Yehuda Berg, a Rabbi, explained more about the tattoo that is seen in the video.
“The “word” on Madonna’s shoulder is not actually a word, but rather one of the names from the 72 Names of G-d. Kabbalah explains that Moses used these names to split the Red Sea and that we can use them to create miracles in our own lives.”
“Each name draws a particular kind of energy. The name in the “Die Another Day” video is for eliminating the ego.”
On her social media, Madonna has on multiple occasions shared images of herself partly dressed. In 2020, she shared an image of herself leaning on a mobility aid with the caption, “Everyone has a Crutch…”
In these images, the pop star does not appear to have any ink on her skin.
For fans, however, getting a tattoo of the star has become a popular way to show their admiration. The fan inkings are of a range of iconic images throughout Madonna’s career.
The singer’s daughter has also chosen a tattoo to show her appreciation of her mom. Lourdes Leon, the star’s grown-up daughter, has the word ‘MOM’ emblazoned across three fingers on her right hand, with the word ‘DAD’ on the left hand.
More About Madonna
Madonna was born in 1958 in Michigan. Her father, a second-generation Italian immigrant, was an engineer while her mother worked in the medical industry.
She was named after her mother, Madonna Fortin, and was one of six siblings. The family was strict Catholics and some Catholic emblems were later used in Madonna’s artistry.
Madonna’s mother died of cancer after being diagnosed while pregnant with the youngest of the six children. Treatment was delayed until after the birth, and Madonna was aged only five when her mother passed away.
As an adult, the musician has spoken about the impact of the loss. “Some of my lack of inhibition comes from my mother’s death,” she said.
“For example, mothers teach you manners. And I absolutely did not learn any of those rules and regulations.”
Despite her childhood struggles, Madonna was academically successful and also showed promise as a dancer. After high school, she enrolled in the University of Michigan, but chose not to complete her studies, instead of heading to New York to pursue a dance career.
After a stint working as a showgirl, she realized that she enjoyed singing as well as dancing. To further enjoy this combination, she joined the band of her then-boyfriend Dan Gilroy.
The release of the song ‘Everybody’ in the early 1980s marked her big break. She had decided to take her singing career seriously, hiring a manager and forming a studio band.
After presenting her song to a record producer, she was given a record deal. The track reached number one in the dance chart and was soon followed up by a full album.
The album was a success, and Madonna’s unique style helped her to stand out from the crowd. In 1985 she released ‘Like A Virgin’, her second album.
The album included some of her biggest hits. Besides the title track, the songs ‘Material Girl’ and ‘Angel’ were also released on the album.
A series of popular albums followed, including 1989’s ‘Like A Prayer’.
Outside of music, Madonna has appeared in several movies. In 1985, she appeared in ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’.
This was followed by ‘Shanghai Surprise’ and ‘Dick Tracy’ to name a few.
Despite her huge fame, Madonna still recalls her years as an upcoming artist. “First of all, I wanted to make a living. I was tired of being broke. But second of all, all I wanted was a song to get played on the radio. That’s all I was praying for. One song.”
