Early Life and Fun Facts
Clooney has had celebrity ties since his birth. His father, Nick Clooney, was a television anchorman and host, and Nick’s two sisters, Rosemary and Betty Clooney, were both singers and actresses.
Rosemary was the biggest star out of the three siblings, but they remained a close family throughout their lives. Clooney often talks about what he learned from his aunt and how his family prepared him to enter the show business industry.
Clooney recalls how he used to take his aunt Rosemary to different gigs and Hollywood parties. “I was a kid on the road with my aunt when she was singing and I was driving her, so I got to drive all these [old-time stars], like Helen O’Connell, and Margaret Whiting, Kaye Ballard, and Kay Starr and all these singers.”
“Gregory Peck used to have these great parties at his house, with Jack Lemmon playing the piano… Gregory and his wife would throw these insanely fun parties with really interesting heads of state and actors… It’s something I’ll always remember. That was really fun.”
When Clooney was 14, long before he became famous, he developed Bell’s palsy, which is a medical condition causing paralysis in parts of the face. He talked about his experience with Larry King in an interview in 2006, saying, “It takes about nine months to go away. It was the first year of high school, which was a bad time for having half your face paralyzed.”
“We were sitting in church and I was in the back of the pew and my tongue was numb… And I was drinking and milk was just pouring out of my mouth,” he explained. “My sister had it as well, and it’s not a hereditary thing.”
While the condition must have been terrifying, especially in having it for almost a year, Clooney found the bright side of the experience in an NPR interview in 2007. “It’s probably a great thing that it happened to me because it forced me to engage in a series of making fun of myself. And I think that’s an important part of being famous. The practical jokes have to be aimed at you.”
He also starred in two different shows called ER–the first, E/R, was in 1984 and was fairly short-lived, while the second, ER, is what helped him get his start in movies. For his role in ER, he earned several prestigious award nominations and quickly became one of the biggest Hollywood stars that there is.
