Jeff Goldblum is an American actor and musician who’s generally considered to be something of an enigma. He’s known for his unquenchable curiosity, but is he a scientologist?
There is no evidence to suggest that Jeff Goldblum has ever been a member of the church of scientology. Jeff Goldblum is Jewish and was born to Jewish parents, attending Hebrew School as a child. He has been linked to Kabbalah, a school of thought in Jewish mysticism.
Read on to learn more about scientology, Goldblum’s spirituality, and his passion for science.
What is scientology?
The Church of Scientology has gained a lot of media exposure and has recruited countless celebrities, some of the most high-profile being Tom Cruise and John Travolta. Jeff Goldblum, however, is not one of them.
Founded by L. Ron Hubbard, it’s founded on a set of beliefs and practises which have drawn significant controversy over the years, and the Church is often defined as a cult.
Is Goldblum Religious?
Though Goldblum has no affiliation with the church of scientology, he is religious and was raised by Jewish parents. The Hollywood star had his Bah mitzvah in 1965 in an Orthodox synagogue.
He has previously been linked to Kabbalah, alongside other famous celebrities such as Madonna, Jennifer Anniston and Gwyneth Paltrow. The faith, as a discipline, is concerned with seeking to define human nature, the universe, and the purpose of existence.
When asked in an interview about whether or not he believes in God, Goldblum obfuscated: “Uhhm, not in the way I think people…, do I believe in a figure outside myself, a being, who lives somewhere… where we can’t see them who, you know, umm, sends you to heaven or hell… I’m not sure I believe in that bit of it. I believe in stillness and spaciousness.”
Attempting to explain how he balances his religion with science, Goldblum further explained:
“I’m leaning more toward the scientific these days. But on the other hand, there’s a poetic side of life that deals with the deepest questions of being human. Science answers a lot of things, but it might not be able to address some of the other aspects. I’m open to all of it”.
A Passion for Science
Although there’s no evidence to suggest that Goldblum is a scientologist, he is generally considered to be extremely bright, with a passion for science.
Speaking about his genuine interest in science, Goldblum said: “I think there’s so much from what we know and what we really know about the beginnings of the universe and the human mechanism that can be not only eye-opening but poetical and inspirational and transformational.”
He’s known for playing the part of eccentric and brainy characters, both in film and commercials. In addition to his knockout performances as scientists in ‘Independence Day’ and ‘Jurassic Park’, he played the part of an approachable nerd in a series of ads for Apple in the 90s, and is Brad Bellflower, the eccentric and futuristic visionary for Apartments.com.
Goldblum considers these roles to have piqued his interest in science and has said: “I’m more focused on science. Because I’ve played these parts here and there, I’ve done my due diligent research so I’ve come to know and esteem a little bit about the scientific way.”
This interest spawned a series with Disney+ called ‘The World According to Jeff Goldblum. The show involves the quirky actor delving into different topics and analyzing them. Goldblum explained:
“We thought we’d do familiar subjects in which we might be able to find something unexpected: historic, scientific, and something of the human connection, our own story, triggered by these things”.
So whilst Jeff Goldblum is absolutely interested in science, he’s definitely not a scientologist.
