As an influential pastor with an enormous church and online platform, Joel Osteen has had the ear of many millions all over the world for many years. Those very same people all know what the Bible says about divorce, so is this pastor practicing what he preaches?
Joel Osteen is married to a woman by the name of Victoria Osteen. The couple were joined in holy matrimony in 1987 after meeting in Victoria’s mother’s jewelry store two years prior. This is the pair’s first and only marriage.
Whether you’re a saint or a sinner, scandals and rumors will follow anyone in the spotlight. Let’s find out if this holy man is indeed a man after his wife’s (and God’s) heart.
Is Joel Osteen Married Or Divorced?
Joel Scott Osteen and Victoria Osteen, nee Iloff, met one day in 1985 when Joel needed a watch battery looked at. Joel just so happened to walk into the jewelry store owned by Mrs. Iloff, Victoria’s mother, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The lovely pair tied the knot two years later in April 1987 and have never looked back. Sharing two children, son Jonathan and daughter Alexandra, this couple seems to have a strong relationship and a loving family.
Both children are involved in the family church, ‘Lakewood,’ with Jonathan preaching to the youth and playing in the worship team’s band. In addition to her work in the church’s worship team, Alexandra has pursued a more professional music career, forming a band called ‘LYA,’ and releasing two studio albums.
Who Is Joel Osteen’s Wife?
Victoria Iloff was born in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1961, and moved with her family to Houston, Texas at the tender age of two. Mrs. Osteen comes from good stock, with her father being a mathematician for General Motors and a member of the project team for Saturn Rocket, before accepting an offer to work for NASA in Houston, which was the reason behind the family relocating.
In her childhood, Victoria attended the Church of Christ, which was considered a conservative church. Both of her parents were active members of the church, with her mother being a Sunday school teacher and her father acting as a deacon.
While working in her mother’s jewelry store, Victoria met Joel and went on to become his wife of over 30 years. She is the founder of ‘Lakewood Church Women’s Ministry,’ and is a New York Times best-selling author after penning her book titled ‘Love Your Life: Living Happy, Healthy, and Whole.’
What Does Joel Osteen Think About Divorce?
The Bible is clear on the D-word and the topic of divorce can be seen as some kind of taboo subject in the Christian community, often being seen as a sin of the highest order. Most people have heard the saying “what God puts together, may no man put asunder” so, seeing that Joel is a Christian pastor who preaches the Bible, it’s easy to assume that he is against divorce.
Joel, however, has discussed divorce in his online sermons on many occasions. Being the head pastor of a church that has over 40,000 weekly attendees, these tough discussions are broached with an attitude of love and understanding to try and meet everyone where they are at in their daily lives.
Having sat for many interviews, Joel has said that he chooses to focus on teaching and preaching the power of God’s love and positivity, rather than reminding his congregation of the sins they have committed. Joel believes that it is better to teach about the devil, or the enemy, as something more than just an outright “bad guy” in your life.
In his book ‘Blessed in the Darkness’ Joel talks about the dark times that most people go through in life, and how keeping a positive perspective is important to make your way back into the light. This book helps people draw closer to God with practical applications of scripture when they just don’t understand why negative things keep happening to them.
Approaching life with such a positive perspective could be the reason Joel and Victoria’s marriage has stood the test of time. That, and Victoria’s trips to Victoria’s Secret stores to treat herself to some lingerie that her loving husband enjoys so very much! It is refreshing to know that even a pastor has their preferences in the underwear their wife wears.
