Music, Shapes and Shaming
Lizzo’s love of music started early on, when she took up playing the flute in the sixth grade. A self-proclaimed band geek, Lizzo continued to classically train as a flautist, even taking part in the marching band in both high school and while she was enrolled at the University of Houston.
Working with various girl groups from the time she was a teenager, Lizzo rose to fame after moving to Minneapolis, then touring both the United States and the U.K. until she scored a record deal with Atlantic in 2016. Though fans and critics loved her music, her appearance often came under fire, with Lizzo’s voluptuous figure being the main target.
Despite the criticism, Lizzo has never let her detractors keep her down, saying, “Who I am, and the essence of me, and the things that I choose to do as a grown-ass woman, can inspire you to do the same. They don’t have to be like me – you need to be like you, and never ever let somebody stop you or shame you from being yourself. This is who I’ve always been – now everyone’s looking at it, and your criticism can just remain your criticism.”
For the Love of Fame and Food
Refusing to be a wallflower, Lizzo often takes to social media to share her over the top outfits and her favorite foods. In fact, Lizzo loves to cook and go to restaurants so much that she considered being a food critic if her music career did not take off, which is how she arrived at her Instagram handle @lizzobeeating.
In June of 2020, Lizzo took to TikTok, a video sharing social network platform, to share the news that she had decided to go vegan. Ever one to spread positivity, the songstress captioned the video, “As a new vegan, I’m enjoying exploring flavors from plants & plant-based proteins! Every journey is personal & deserves to be celebrated.”
Viral Vegan Videos
The singer shared some of her new-found favorites, which includes green breakfast smoothies, hearty salads filled with veggies and fruits, and quinoa-based meals for dinner. She’s even found alternatives to her favorite snack food, Cheetos, which are not vegan, but she’s replaced them with Lesser Evil Paleo Puffs and pairs them with hummus.

Despite all the improvements she has made, Lizzo does admit that she misses what she calls “hangover food,” but she’s taken it upon herself to experiment with recipes and shared a vegan alternative to cheesy eggs, which were once her staple after a night out on the town.
Though this was not her first foray into a plant-based diet, with Lizzo confirming that while living in Minneapolis pre-stardom, she had embraced vegetarianism, saying, “Minneapolis has really, really real good vegetarian and vegan food options,” she shared with the outlet. “I really discovered my vegetarianism and my veganism there. I found places that were really creative with how they made vegan food and it wasn’t just fluff, just tofu, just seitan. It was like, finding ways to make vegetable-based proteins.”
Even with the switch to a vegan diet, Lizzo still drew the ire of those who believe she’s unhealthy. Shortly after her announcement, she once again took to TikTok to show her workout for the day and to tell the haters to worry about themselves. No one can say how long Lizzo’s new plant-based diet will last, but it’s clear she’s going to continue doing things her way, no matter what anyone else thinks.
