Early Life
Meghan Elizabeth Trainor was born on December 22, 1993 to Kelli and Gary Trainor in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Both of her parents are employed as jewelers.
Meghan has an older and younger brother and began participating in music at an early age when she would sing at her local Methodist church with her father who was a music teacher and organist.
She told her father at a young age that she wanted to become a recording artist and her family, especially her parents, encouraged her to follow her dreams.
Meghan began toying with GarageBand and creating her own music and learned the techniques of creating music without ever being formally trained.
When she was 12 years old, Meghan became involved with a local cover band called Island Fusion. It was then that Meghan began performing her very own songs, including her first titled
“Give Me a Chance.”
Meghan and her family moved to a different part of Massachusetts when she was in eighth grade and she continued exploring her talents. The young singer became part of a jazz band and was a member for three years.
She also continued to create her own music at home, using Logic Studio to record her own compositions. Her parents built her an in-home studio and Meghan spent countless hours creating her art there.
Success
Starting at age 15, Meghan Trainor released three independent albums that she wrote, performed and produced herself. She started taking summer classes at the Berklee College of Music and her debut album, Meghan Trainor, was released on Christmas Day, 2009.
While making connections at a music conference in Nashville, Meghan met the owners of Big Yellow Dog Music, who signed her in 2012.
Although she was signed to an independent label, Meghan took the approach of writing music for other artists instead of her own. Her father claims that was because she lacked confidence and still saw herself as “one of the chubby girls who would never be an artist.”
During the next year. Meghan would travel across the country to write and help produce country and pop songs for other artists. She would sing background vocals on some of those songs too.
In mid-2013, Trainor and producer Kevin Kadish began recording together and she moved to Nashville to pursue her music career even more.
Breakthrough
Kadish and Trainor collaborated together in November 2013 and wrote the song “All About That Bass”. The song was about Meghan’s insecurities due to her body image.
The song was released by Epic Records after Trainor was signed to the label during a meeting with chairman L.A. Reid. “All About That Bass” rocketed up the charts and reached number one in 58 different countries.
The music video for the song was also a major hit and put Meghan in the middle of the spotlight.
Meghan’s first album, Title, was released on January 9, 2015. It featured the hits “All About That Bass”, “Lips Are Movin”, and “Like I’m Gonna Lose You”. It would go on to be the ninth best-selling album of 2015 worldwide and was certified triple platinum.
