Shakira eats healthily to stay in the best shape possible and achieve the fitness levels needed for her performances on stage. Which foods does she enjoy as part of her diet and do we know her favorite?
While there’s no clear statement of Shakira’s absolute favorite food, her personal trainer and dietician revealed that she has a love of both pork chops and oranges. There are also stories of her apparently loving fried mojarra (a whole freshwater fish) with patacones (fried green plantains), a popular Colombian dish.
For more on some of Shakira’s eating habits and her favorite foods, read on.
Shakira’s Diet
Shakira’s diet is well rounded, focused on whole fresh foods. In the build-up to her Super Bowl LIV performance, she removed dairy from her diet completely and consumed a minimal amount of sugar.
Her personal trainer, Anna Kaiser, with whom she has worked for about a decade, sets out a formal diet plan before big concerts or tours.
It’s important that this diet provides Shakira with enough energy for her busy lifestyle, with workouts six days a week and rehearsals about as often. Kaiser says it’s important that any diet is balanced and that it’s crucial to be allowed to cheat on your diet once in a while.
The diet for Shakira is heavy in plants and fish. Breakfast is typically eggs or avocado with olive oil, tomato and sea salt, followed by a smoothie with plenty of greens and berries.
Lunch will be fish and vegetables or a salad. Shakira and Kaiser discovered that they were struggling to fit in an afternoon meal around rehearsals, so Kaiser recommended a soup that can be easily warmed up, such as artichoke or leek and eggplant.
Dinner is also fish and vegetables, usually eaten cold. Despite how repetitive this might seem, there is flexibility allowed. Fish will sometimes be replaced by pork chops, which Kaiser says is one of Shakira’s favorite foods.
Some dark chocolate can also be enjoyed as a snack, as long as it’s especially dark with high cocoa content so that there is very little or no sugar in it.
Eating lots of fruit and vegetables doesn’t seem like a hardship for Shakira. Kaiser mentioned that the singer loves oranges with almonds; beautiful oranges are probably easy to come by in Shakira’s current home of Barcelona.
Shakira rarely stops throughout the day, so Kaiser’s meal plan is similar to an athlete’s, with several small meals of 200 to 300 calories throughout the day. This ensures that she’s always burning calories but also always has sufficient energy to make it through her busy days.
It’s worth remembering that this particular diet was especially strict and used as Super Bowl LIV preparation and Shakira’s usual eating habits are hopefully a bit more enjoyable.
Mojarra
One of Shakira’s favorite meals is apparently fried mojarra with patacones. In Colombia, mojarra is a fried whole freshwater fish, meaning it’s hopefully still allowed as part of Anna Kaiser’s diet plans.
Shakira grew up on the north coast of Colombia and mojarra is often made using crappie, a fish from the coasts of the Caribbean, so it was likely in steady supply.
Patacones are fried plantains (slices of banana), a dish that Shakira has loved since childhood. The end result is similar to fried potatoes, however bananas contain a lot more nutritional goodness than potatoes, even after being fried.
Given the amount of shallow frying that is involved in making this dish, it’s unlikely that Shakira was able to enjoy it too often as part of her Super Bowl LIV diet plan but there’s no reason that anybody can’t enjoy it as an occasional treat.
