Erigga, one of the most popular Nigerian hip hop artists in the world, has come a long way over the years, releasing several albums, nominated for several awards, and has a history of working hard and a bright future full of possibilities. But, in terms of music, where did it all begin?
Erigga’s first song was titled ‘Mo Street Gan,’ which was available as both a song and music video (which was filmed in Nigeria), and soon became the Radio Continential’s theme song. The song was released back in 2011.
Whether you’re hearing about Erigga for the first time, interested in learning more about him and his music, or just want to see where this guy is at, you’ve come to the right place as we’re about to deep dive into everything you’ll want to know.
Erigga in the Spotlight
Erigga grew up having a fairly ordinary life. He was born in Warri, Delta State, one of the most beloved cities in Nigeria, Africa, and is the oldest of five children. He attended the local school, known as Standard International School, both for his primary and secondary years.
Back in 2010 was when Erigga started to pursue his own music career, having a lot of love for rap and hip hop. Over the years, he worked with several studios trying to produce a hit, including producers like Mr. Nolimit, BeatsbyMellow, and C Major.
It was here where Erigga wrote and sung his first hit single, Mo Street Gann.
Since releasing this track, Erigga released other singles, including “Coupé Décalé ft Shuun Bebe” in 2013, “Love No Be Garri” in 2014, and Motivation in 2018. They were all well received by fans, and Motivation was even nominated for the Best Street-Hop Artiste award at The Headies Event back in 2019.
On the studio album front, Erigga didn’t start releasing full albums until 2017, where he debuted with A Trip to The South under the Emirat Empire label. This was followed by Okorowanta in 2018, a re-release of A Trip to The South under the name ‘The Erigma,’ and then The Erigma II in October 2019.
Judging from these albums, Erigma is still working on his way up, and we’re sure we can expect many more popular releases in the upcoming future.
Erigga’s Making Moves
Perhaps surprisingly, Erigga was featured in many blog and news headlines around the world, back in early January 2021, after he tweeted about Elon Musk becoming the world’s richest man, and Elon himself actually responded to the tweet.
While a small tweet, Erigga tweeted asking his followers whether they would rather have dinner with Elon Musk or have two Bitcoin.
Elon replied around 12 hours later with a simple crying emoji face, to which Erigga replied,
“So my tweet make the richest man in the world burst cry @elonmusk. Who fit help me frame this tweet abeg?”
This isn’t the first time Erigga has been noticed and written about for his tweets. Also, during January 2021, Erigga received some controversial backlash for his tweet against Bobrisky. Bobrisky, a crossdresser, uploaded a video offering advice saying how women can handle men better this year, offering advice on how to moan more convincingly in bed.
Erigga responded with a tweet saying;
“Na bobrisky advice you wan follow or you be Ashawo before?”
Fans had mixed opinions on this response. One female follower of Erigga replied;
“BOBRISKY’s advice is not bad though, she legit says things the way things are, I have been a fan for years and wouldn’t stop She’s a vibe mehn, No lies. Now the question is DO I HAVE THE MIND TO DO THE THINGS SHE ADVISES? Low key I wish I have the mind to follow that part.”
This, again, isn’t the first time Erigga has been seen quoting his opinion on women and how they perceive or present themselves in the world, once swiping at Lagos girls for using surgery for thinner waists and then deceiving men.
As seems true with 2020 culture, we hope Erigga doesn’t say anything too far that jeopardizes his fanbase because we, for one, want to see him continue to make music as we can see him reaching great heights with his career.
We’re ready for the next albums when you are, Erigga!
