Bill Murray has had an extremely successful and long-hauled acting career and is known for coming in and out of the entertainment industry every once in a while with a fun new project. Since the peak of his career, Bill Murray has been slowing down a little bit, not having to spend much time in the Hollywood scene anymore, so he tends to spend a lot of his time on the east coast.
Bill Murray As the Comedic Genius
Bill Murray was born in Wilmette, Illinois, and was the fifth out of nine children. Growing up, he was the troublemaker in his family, getting kicked out of Little League baseball and even arrested at age 20 for smuggling marijuana through Chicago O’Hare Airport.
He didn’t really know what he wanted to do in his life during his adolescent years, so he decided to join his brother in the cast of Chicago’s Second City improvisational comedy troupe. He spent a little while with the cast until deciding to move to New York City.
After moving to New York City, Murray decided to keep pursuing his steps towards an acting career and tried to seek out smaller roles he could audition for. He ended up taking his comedic talents to a radio show called “National Lampoon Hour” and in 1975, he and his brother were part of an off-Broadway spin-off of the show.
While performing the show, Bill Murray was recruited by sportscaster Howard Cosell for his show on ABC called “Saturday Night Live With Howard Cosell”. That same year the show “Saturday Night Live” was created on NBC and Murray replaced Chevy Chase.
Murray’s first role on the big screen was for the film “Meatballs” in 1979. The film was a box office hit and it helped Bill Murray’s name spread throughout the entertainment industry.
He found himself performing really well in the comedy genre, and went on to be part of other successful films in the 1980s including “Stripes”, “Tootsie” and “Ghostbusters”.
In the next few years, Murray found himself working on films back to back, including “Scrooged”, the dark comedic version of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”. It ended up being a holiday classic and lined up future jobs for Murray.
The movie was followed by the successful “Groundhog Day” in 1993 and “Rushmore” in 1998, which is said to be Bill Murray’s best work.
Throughout the 2000s, Bill worked on a number of films and collaborated with other famous actors at the time such as George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Scarlett Johannson. He got his first Academy Award nomination in 2003 for his role in “Lost in Translation”.
In 2016, Murray appeared in the female reboot of “Ghostbusters” and received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
In 2019, Bill Murray started working on the return of one of his most popular works “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”.
