Left-handers make up only around 10% of the population, and some of Hollywood’s biggest stars belong to this group. Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, and Mark Wahlberg come to mind, but is Jessica Alba one of the selected few who are able to write with their left hand?
Yes, Jessica Alba is left-handed. This trait made her school experience a bit tricky and judging by the photos and videos that show her signing autographs, she doesn’t mind using her right hand.
Left-Handed Troubles
Jessica Alba didn’t have an easy time in school, and often had to miss classes since she was in and out of hospital due to her asthma diagnosis. The fact she was a leftie didn’t make things any easier, and she tried to defy her teacher who encouraged her to use her right hand instead.
“From a very early age, I remember thinking that adults were always acting like a–holes. I couldn’t understand why I had to respect them. My pre-school teacher forced me to write right-handed when I was left-handed. I didn’t get why I had to change. Nobody could give me a reason. I have had a big problem with authority ever since,” Alba told The Guardian.
It’s not uncommon for lefties to learn using both hands in equal measure, because the world simply isn’t designed for them to thrive. Forced use of the right hand has been recorded throughout history in several cultures around the world, and the British King George VI is the most notable figure who was forced to write using his right hand, despite the fact he was a leftie.
Using Both Hands
Jessica Alba never further discussed her left-handedness, apart from saying it led to problems with authority, but it’s pretty obvious she learned how to write with her right hand, as well. Numerous videos of the actress signing autographs show her using her right hand.
Back in 2013, Alba was pretty busy promoting her first book The Honest Life, and she’s been spotted signing copies with her right hand. It’s safe to assume she uses it much more than her left, especially once you look at multiple clips of her beauty routine.
Alba shared her guide to “daytime smokey eye” with Vogue and she was shown applying the majority of products and tools – ranging from a massaging beauty tool to makeup brush – with her right hand. She also shared a video giving her daughters haircuts with her right hand, which makes a lot of sense since scissors happen to be pretty difficult to use when you’re a leftie.
Alba Left-Handed Co-Stars
Jessica Alba is far from being the only leftie in Hollywood – as a matter, of fact, she’s not the only superstar named Jessica to write with her left hand! The same can be said about the Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker. To make the whole thing even better, Parker’s husband Matthew Broderick is left-handed, as well!
Alba also worked alongside many fellow lefties throughout her career. The most notable example is 2010 comedy Little Fockers, where she wasn’t even the only left-handed person on the set, since Robert De Niro, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson also happen to belong to this group.
Bruce Willis, who appeared in Sin City and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For alongside Alba, is also one of her high-profile left-handed cast mates. The list of lefties that she worked with in the past also includes Julia Roberts (Valentine’s Day), Kate Hudson (The Killer Inside Me), and Will Ferrell (The Spoils of Babylon) – to name just a few.
Eminem, who dropped Jessica Alba’s name in songs “My Band”, “We Made You”, and “Evil Twin”, might’ve written them with his left-hand since he also happens to be a leftie. Long story short, she’s in a very good company!
