Being well travelled and having acted in movies set all over the world it is possible that Keanu Reeves might have picked up a language or two along the way.
Although the instances when he does speak French are few and far between, Keanu Reeves can, in fact, speak French. It is questionable whether he is fluent in the language and clearly prefers speaking English, but Keanu has fun speaking French even if his pronunciation isn’t perfect.
Read more below about how fluent Keanu’s French is and the actor’s unusual ancestry.
Keanu Seen Speaking French
Keanu Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon but moved to Canada in 1971 when he was 7 years old. Reeves began acting as a child, just two years later, when he took part in a theatre production of Damn Yankees. Over the years, he has become an action movie icon having starred in Speed, The Matrix, and the John Wick series.
Reeves has been rumored to know French after being seen in the below YouTube clip, speaking French to the camera whilst on the set of Henry’s Crime (2010):
In the video Reeves talks to fans about Henry’s Crime, saying “it’s amazing…the film is moving and funny. You’re going to love it! I hope…” In seemingly almost perfect French. Yet, on taking a closer look, a French language analyst from StreetFrench.org tells her viewers that “his pronunciation is not the best” and “his nasal sound is a bit off”. However, she later decides that, “his pronunciation isn’t that bad” and that, more importantly, “he’s having fun doing it”.

On other occasions, “fun facts” sources, although hardly reliable, claim that “Keanu speaks French.” Another says, “he speaks French fluently.” However, in Larissa Zageris and Kitty Curran’s 2019 book, For Your Consideration: Keanu Reeves, an autobiographical book attributed to Reeve’s life and work, the writers mention nothing about Reeves speaking French or spending any length of time in France.
Film Festivals in France
Despite never having lived in a French-speaking region of the world or in France itself, Reeves has travelled to the latter on multiple occasions to attend film festivals and conference presses. Whilst speaking at Lyon Film Festival Festival Lumière in 2014, Reeves began his talk attempting to speak French, assumedly well, but very quickly resorted back to English. Our aforementioned French analyst describes how he needs to use an “English word here and there” as he “tries to make the best sentence he can”.
Clearly, the actor is considerably better at English than French, but even still he can understand and retaliate when spoken to in French. At Parisian Champs-Elysées film festival, again in 2014, Reeves did not speak French himself, but appeared to understand the host perfectly, who was speaking entirely in French. At one point, whilst the host was addressing her audience in French, Reeves responded by performing slapstick-style movements, acting out in comedic fashion what was being said.
Reeves’ Asian Roots
The actor has no French ancestral background or any known familial ties to France. Despite this, he does have other interesting, multi-cultural and multi-racial origins. For one, Keanu’s father, Reeves Jr. is from Hawaii where Keanu’s name means “cool breeze over the mountains”. What’s more is that Reeves Jr. is also of Chinese, English, Irish and Portuguese descent. Growing up in Canada, Keanu himself was primarily raised by his Chinese-Hawaiian grandmother. As such, he became accustomed to Chinese culture, art, furniture and cuisine. Reeve’s doesn’t often mention his ancestry, speaking to Essence Magazine he said, “I am not a spokesperson” for Asian actors in Hollywood, but says he’s always been proud of his varied heritage.
Although Reeves doesn’t speak perfect French and prefers English, even when in France, the actor evidently has a knack for learning languages, having to learn some of his lines in Russian for movie John Wick, and has a bloodline that sprouts from countries all over the world.
