Since Jason Momoa’s wife, Lisa Bonet, has been very vocal in the past about having a plant-based diet, many people have been wondering if Jason Momoa adopted the same diet.
While Jason Momoa loves animals and animal rights, he is not a vegan. Lisa Bonet also seems to no longer be vegan. Despite that, the two do have many animals together, but Jason does eat meat to bulk up.
Continue reading to find out what it means to be vegan and what Jason Momoa does eat.
What Does it Mean to be Vegan?
People sometimes confuse being vegan with being vegetarian. A vegetarian is a person who does not eat meat or seafood. Being vegan goes one step further.
A vegan is a person who eats no animal products. So, in addition to no meat and no seafood, vegans also do not eat animal by-products. This means no eggs, dairy, or products made from animals, like leather.
Jason Momoa’s Diet
As Jason Momoa maintains quite a muscular physique, he uses meat to provide him with necessary protein for gaining muscle. To star in Aquaman, he had to bulk up even more.
So, he had to adopt a strict diet and workout regimen for the film. This consisted of vegetables, fruits before a workout, peanut butter, honey sandwiches again before his workout for energy, chicken for protein, steak again for protein and fish.
Most of these items are not vegan in the slightest and though this is not his exact diet all the time, it is close. It is clear that he did not adopt the plant based diet his wife used to promote.
In 1990, Lisa Bonet went on an episode of The Phil Donahue Show to talk about the benefits of plant-based diets and also discussed the diseases associated with consuming meat. She also talked about the negative impact eating meat has on the environment.
She was so adamant on plant-based diets that she even raised her daughter, Zoe Kravitz, on a plant based diet. Zoe even said recently that she sticks to a vegan diet now because that is how she was raised.
That being said, it does not seem like Lisa Bonet is a vegan still as she has talked about eating eggs and toast with butter for breakfast. Some suggest she stopped being vegan in 2005 when she started dating Jason Momoa.
Despite the two not being vegan, they do have a love for animals as at home they have goats, two wolfdogs and a donkey.
Jason Momoa’s Environmental Efforts
Even though Momoa is not a vegan, he does try to help the environment in other ways. In 2019, he launched a sustainable canned water brand named Mananalu.
He created the brand to cut back on single-use plastic bottles that are polluting our oceans around the globe. His canned water is made out of aluminum as he explains: “76 percent of aluminum that’s ever been used is still in circulation today, and it’s 100 percent recyclable.
So you drink the can, and in about 60 days, it’ll be back”.
Later in the year, he also became very vocal and started protesting against the construction of a Thirty Meter Telescope on top of the mountain Mauna Kea in Hawaii. It is the tallest mountain in Hawaii which provides the clearest look into the night sky, but it is sacred to Hawaiians like Momoa.
Also in 2019, he addressed the United Nations (UN) to discuss climate change. He said: “We can no longer afford the luxury of half assing it as we willingly force ourselves beyond the threshold of no return”.
He goes on to say that we are all in danger if serious change does not come about. So, it is clear that he cares about the environment, he just has other ways of trying to save it.
