Whether you are a die-hard Drake fan just wanting to touch up your general knowledge on this talented artist, or you have a burning desire to write a romantic letter to Drake in the language of love, keep reading in order to find out whether he can, in fact, speak French.
No one knows explicitly whether or not Drake speaks French, however, it is likely that he does not. This is because Toronto does not contain a large number of French speakers, and Drake has not proven otherwise in any interviews or songs. However, he may just be keeping it to himself.
This may come as a shock because, after all, he is Canadian. You can come to your own conclusion after reading the reasons why he probably doesn’t speak fluent French. Or, if in the case you have received a love letter back from Drake himself (you lucky thang!) please feel free to let us know; we would love to see that he is even more talented than he already is (and heart-eyes emoji all over it).
If he’s Canadian, why doesn’t Drake speak French?
He was birthed in Toronto, where, as of 2016, only 1.6 per cent of people speak French as their mother tongue. Now, that is not to say that people can’t be bilingual. French is one of the main languages spoken in Toronto, and 7.9 per cent of the population are in fact bilingual, speaking both English and French. This means that, whilst we know Drake speaks English, we can only guess that he might not speak French fluently, as the percentage for bilingual speakers is relatively low. However, we still don’t know for certain.
Does he know any French at all?
There is a strong possibility that he knows at least some of the language. He went to high school in Toronto, where they likely taught him some French. That being said, he dropped out at age 15 to pursue an acting career. He then went back and graduated high school at the age of 25. We love a smart and motivated king.
He said that his goal was to be a singer, and 4 Grammys later, it looks like he has accomplished his goal.
His mother was Jewish and raised him after his parents divorced. Drake has had a very humble upbringing, and he likes to remind us through his music. Started from the bottom now he’s here.
Does he have any songs in French, or partial French?
Drake currently does not have any songs which are written or sung in the French language. This concludes that he probably does not speak fluent French, as if he was bilingual, he would likely want to show off, or at least be proud of the fact that he speaks the wonderful language. The closest thing that Drake gets to ‘French’ is his collaboration with the artist French Montana. Take a listen here:
There is limited information regarding whether Drake does speak French or not, however, in this video, if you listen closely you are able to hear Drake speak in French for a short while, albeit the quality isn’t great.
This means that he probably knows the basics, you know, like how you only ever go to the cinema with your friends on the weekend. Oh, and how to address millions of people in an audience. The usual.
Where is he based now?
He still has a residence in Toronto, and of course, he also is based in California. He now has a son, Adonis, who is super cute. Maybe Adonis will learn some French and teach his daddy a thing or two.
Drake has had issues of fans invading his privacy, so please, don’t go hunting for him.
Conclusion (kind of)
As it is not confirmed, we cannot conclude if Drake can speak French or not, however, we can take a wild guess that he probably isn’t fluent. If you have ever had a conversation with Drake in French, or somehow know that he does, do let us know in the comments.
Anyway, even if he does not speak fluent French, who really cares? He speaks the best language: the language of rap and song, one that we can all understand and relate to.
