What Is A Boomer?
There are currently six different generations according to when you were born. Starting with the Silent Generation (1928 to 1945), Baby Boomers (1944 to 1964), Generation X (1965 to 1979), Generation Y/Millenials (1980 to 1994), Generation Z (1995 to 2015) and the newest one, Generation Alpha (2015 to present).
There are currently 76 million Baby Boomers in the United States alone. The name Baby Boomer came from the period after World War II when soldiers were coming home from war, there was a surge in births around 9 months later also known as the baby boom.
Recently in November 2019, the phrase “Ok boomer” came out and has spread internationally thanks to the internet.
The phrase is typically used among Millennials and Generation Z to dismiss or mock attitudes that are typically attributed to the Baby Boomer Generation.
For example, it is typically used to dismiss a Boomer’s casual racist remarks. The suggestion is that having a conversation to counteract a Boomer’s argument is too unproductive.
It has become popular among younger people, but members of the Baby Boomer Generation have said that it is offensive. One boomer, an American radio talk show host named Bob Lonsberry, said that the phrase is as offensive as saying the n-word and it is ageist.
Some even tried to popularize the phrase, “Ok Millennial”, but it did not have the same reception.
