Travis Scott was an accomplished artist fairly early on in his life, but what was his first song?
Travis Scott’s first song was titled Blocka La Flame and was released as a promotion ahead of his first solo mixtape in 2013. The full mixtape was released shortly after to great success.
Read on to learn more about Travis Scott’s musical beginnings.
Mixed Beginnings
Travis Scott, whose birth name is Jacques Berman Webster II, started his life in Houston, Texas. He’s explained before that from his earliest years, he’s experienced the rough life the streets can provide. He grew up in a particularly dangerous and crime-ridden neighborhood and has stated that this impacted him.
This was while he lived with his grandmother, however. After realizing at a young age that the environment was no good for him, he relocated to live with his parents. They were relatively better-off than his grandmother, with his father being a business owner and his mother working for Apple.
Travis Scott didn’t want to be a musician from the get-go. In a 2018 video on YouTube, Scott reminisces about specific parts of his life. In the video, he explains that he actually wanted to be a phrenologist, a doctor specializing in the kidneys. You can see the video below.
He attended school, graduated normally, and then started studying at the University of Texas in San Antonio. However, he’d fallen well and truly in with music by this point, and dropped out to pursue it full time.
Allegedly, his parents were so infuriated by his decision that they cut him off. They’d pledged to not support him financially, but he didn’t let that stop him. Scott relocated up the East Coast, to New York City.
In 2008, he attempted to form a musical duo with a long-time friend. They tried to use early social media to release the fledgling music they produced. However, when Travis Scott journeyed to New York City in an attempt to make it, it would be as a solo act.
He didn’t find much success in the city, though. After a relatively short stint in the city, he relocated once again, to Los Angeles. The struggles continued, and he found himself unable to secure a residence. This led to a return to his parent’s home, but he was subsequently kicked out once again.
Determined Talent
Travis Scott didn’t give up, through all this adversity. He remained dedicated, and continued to try and make a name through mixtapes and a social media presence. He collaborated with some smaller artists, trying to get his image seen.
His first solo venture came under fire numerous times and was constantly delayed. However, in 2013, Scott was able to release one track from this project, called Blocka La Flame. This was essentially his first ever track, and generated great success.
Shortly after, the entire project would be released for public consumption. Travis Scott began to find considerable success from that point on, and launched a huge tour in 2014. He released another mixtape, and toured North America to promote it.
He had substantial support, with artists such as Chris Brown and Kanye West coming out as special guests. Scott’s first full studio album would release in 2015, and was titled Rodeo. The lead single on this album was 3500, marking his first official studio track.
The success would continue to rise exponentially for Scott. By 2020, he’d have released three full studio albums and two full mixtapes. There were countless collaborations, and he’d receive a string of awards and nominations. Most prestigious of all were the five nominations for Grammy Awards.
In a relatively short time, this aspiring star had become one of the leading figures in the world of hip-hop and trap.
