Since he spent years by the sea working on the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, many people are asking, can Johnny Depp surf? He’s just one of those people who seem capable of doing it all and many people are wondering if this includes surfing.
No, Johnny Depp cannot surf. While he’s been photographed with a surfboard, owns a few houses by the ocean, and has spent a lot of time in surf meccas like Australia, he hasn’t added surfing to his long list of pastimes.
If you’re one of the fans asking if Johnny Depp can hang ten, you’re probably familiar with the photo of him and then co-star Orlando Bloom. They won their first award together at the 2006 Teen Choice Awards and the award happened to be a giant orange surfboard.
But does the actor wind down by hitting the waves? Not exactly. Depp may have starred as a famous surf boarder in an episode of SpongeBob SquarePants, but he’s not been known to surf in his personal life.
Jack Kahuna Laguna
If you’re a fan of Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, you may recognize the episode called The Big One. It aired on April 17, 2009 and featured a very special role for a very special actor. The SpongeBob SquarePants crew warmly welcomed Depp as he played an enigmatic surf guru character mama Jack Kahuna Laguna.
Depp was the voice behind the surfing character and he led a crew of Squidward, Patrick, and SpongeBob on a journey to Bikini Bottom through the legendary wave aptly named “The Big One.”
The wave supposedly only came once in a lifetime and, like SpongeBob and his friends, the real Johnny Depp didn’t really know how to surf either.
Surf’s Up… Or Not
It looks like Johnny Depp can impress fans with many skills. He’s a multifaceted man with a variety of interests and passions to keep himself and his fans satisfied. While he spends a lot of time at sea (both in films and in his personal life), he hasn’t been known to trade his yacht for a surfboard.
Depp may own his own private island (complete with six beaches!) but he’s only been known to spend his time snorkeling, reading, painting, and playing guitar. So, while Depp may seem like the man who can do anything, he hasn’t added surfing to that list—not yet, anyway.
