Harry Styles is one of the world’s top musicians. He writes poetic lyrics and is well-spoken in interviews, but did the singer attend college?
Harry Styles did not go to college. His plans of earning a college degree were suddenly derailed when his music career took off.
Harry was actually not a very good student, but he intended to continue his education to earn a college degree. However, his early success catapulted him into a busy life of playing music.
Harry’s Education Came to an Abrupt Halt
Harry Styles was on track to attend college at the age of sixteen. He finished secondary school at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School and completed his GCSE exams just before his successful audition for The X Factor in 2010.
Harry’s life changed forever on The X Factor when he was paired with Louis, Zayn, Niles, and Liam, forming One Direction. Even though the band did not win the competition, Harry and his bandmates gained enough fame to pursue music careers and tour around the world together.
Harry did not know that he would not return to school in the fall. He wanted to study law, sociology, and business before dropping out to make music full-time.
Harry seems to have made the right choice by prioritizing music over education. He recalls that his teachers warned him he would not make money with a degree in the humanities.
Harry Struggled to Earn Good Grades in School
Harry Styles was a decent student, but he did not earn exceptionally high grades. His older sister, Gemma, reveals that she was more studious and Harry found it difficult to follow in her footsteps.
Harry was a talkative and distracting student. His mother coached him through his homework and studying, but he would still get nervous before important exams.
Harry’s sister set a high academic bar for her brother to meet. Gemma believes that Harry was frustrated when he could not earn the same grades as her.
Harry “Went” to College for Another Reason
Although Harry did not attend college himself, he did visit one university in England rather frequently. The singer found time in his busy schedule to take trips to Sheffield Hallam University near London to visit his sister.
Harry’s sister, Gemma, earned her degree in genetics from Sheffield Hallam University with honors and qualified teaching status. Gemma is three years older than Harry and was already in University when her brother dropped out of school to perform music.
Harry visited Sheffield Hallam University for the last time in 2015 to attend Gemma’s graduation. The University celebrated his visit by tweeting a photo of him and his graduating sister.
Harry’s Sister Went Astray from Her College Degree
Although Harry’s sister, Gemma Styles, completed her degree, she did not ultimately pursue a career related to her studies. She studied genetics and earned her teaching certificate, but life took her down a different path.
Instead of becoming a geneticist or biology teacher, Gemma Styles currently works in media. She boasts a robust social media following and regularly publishes articles online.
Gemma also collaborated with Kenmark eyewear to design her own sunglasses. She named her sunglasses after old songs. Her designs were successful and every single pair sold out.
Gemma and Harry Styles both live interesting lives that oppose the usual emphasis placed on college degrees. Gemma does not use her college degree for her career, and Harry became a millionaire without ever attending college at all.
