Can Johnny Depp speak French? Johnny Depp and his accent has been the topic of much discussion over the years. He’s left fans wondering about his accent for years, as it’s constantly evolving—even he doesn’t know where it comes from.
Yes – Johnny Depp can speak French, so if you’ve detected an accent in one of his interviews, you’re pretty spot on. He’s lived in France, has starred in movies filmed in France, has a Parisian ex-girlfriend, and even posted a photo in a French grotto as one of the first photos on his Instagram.
Yes, it is clear that Depp has a love for all things French—but is that the reason behind his ability to speak the language? It looks like there are a few factors that played in his decision to learn the foreign language. Let’s take a look at why the actor started parler français.
French-Speaking Kids
Probably the biggest reason Depp has continued to perfect his oui and non throughout the years is for his two French-speaking children. The actor has two children with Vanessa Paradis who were raised bilingually.
During their early life, the children, (Lily-Rose and Jack) spoke French with their mother and English with Depp. In order to simplify their life and be able to understand them at all times, Depp took learning French seriously.
In a 2006 interview, he reported that he was still struggling with a terrible accent, but had improved his French speaking and comprehension skills enough to be able to understand his kids and even speak with them.
A Parisian Life
Johnny Depp did what we all wish we could when we learn a new language, he made Paris his home. When dating French singer/model/actress, Vanessa Paradis, the actor spent a lot of his time living in France.
Splitting his time between Paris and New York, Depp was truly able to perfect his French language skills that he had been working on for decades.
The actor fell in love with the Parisian lifestyle. He reported in a 2010 interview that France was his “spiritual home” and that his Parisian life afforded him the idea of a “semi-normal life.”
He’s certainly loved the time he’s spent in France over the years, but even though he considered the country his true home (and a magnetic one, at that), he still reported some difficulties with the language.
He may sound pretty good to fans, but Depp said himself that he’s struggled with French conjugations and the masculine and feminine aspects of the language.
French Films and Interviews
Throughout the years, Depp has spent a lot of time in France for film roles. In the 2010 film The Tourist, Depp spent nearly a year filming with co-star Angelina Jolie in Venice and Paris.
When preparing for the movie Chocolat, Depp joined co-star Juliette Binoche in several French towns. In fact, aside from some scenes that weirdly had to be filmed in England, much of the movie was shot in a stone-walled french village called Flavigny. The location appears to be something out of a history book and is located in the country’s Cote-d’Or region.
More recently, when Depp worked with TIm Burton on films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, and Sweeney Todd, the actor reportedly spoke the language when doing interviews in France.
Trés Bien!
It appears that his time in Paris and his love for the country have paid off because Depp is one of only a handful of the most famous Hollywood names to be able to speak a different language. He may feel slightly uncomfortable about his accent or his use of conjugations, but it seems that he’s a pretty talented Francophile.
And, if he is really worried about his French fluency, he can always turn to his daughter, Lily-Rose. She recently released a video explaining how to perfect the French accent.
