She’s a successful actress with over twenty-five years in the business and a member of the British Royal family, but does Meghan Markle have a degree to back up her beauty with brains?
Meghan has a degree in Communications. In 2003, Markle graduated from Illinois’ Northwestern’s School of Communication with a bachelor’s degree, backed up with a double major in international studies and theatre.
Read on to find out more about Meghan Markle’s hidden educational achievements and what she’s doing to better the world.
Nerdy Girl Turned Acting Icon
It might seem hard to believe but the socialite philanthropist that is Meghan Markle has lived a lot of her life behind a book or deep in her studies. As a result of her majorly wealthy parentage, Markle was enrolled in private schooling in and around Hollywood when she was younger, giving her a stark advantage against her peers.
She became enamoured with education and change at a young age, campaigning successfully to have a national television commercial amended on the basis of sexism. Her schooling was strict and mostly took place within an all-girl Catholic private school.
In University (College), Markle was fully involved in extracurricular activities, both on and off campus.
She joined a prolific sorority – Kappa Kappa Gamma – and did all she could to give back to the local community.
You can see a short video below that highlights Markle’s opinions on the importance of education.
The Qualifications Ignored
Following a successful acting career, Meghan Markle became engaged to, and eventually married, Prince Harry of the British Royal family. However, there was a lot of dissent among the family and the people of the United Kingdom, thinking this relationship to be rushed and baseless.
Unfortunately, Markle took the brunt of this animosity and became the bearer of many nicknames and jibes. One of which was the branding of ‘degree wife’, so named for the assumption that the relationship would ‘only last three years’. It seemed the young woman who had worked so hard to build her education up would now be mocked with an ambiguous title that in a way could have described her in a positive light.
Further, her achievements were even dismissed by the very university she had graduated from many years before. The Northwestern University in Illinois named Markle in their printed prospectus, but simply described her as a ‘humanitarian’ and the ‘Duchess of Sussex’.
Coming Full Circle
Although her life has seen struggle in recent years, including a spontaneous drop from the immediate circle of the Royal Family, Markle has undoubtedly been trying to make her way back on top. As she has taken a step back from acting, her time has been freed up to promote worthy and wholehearted causes, and her background in communications and international studies is shining through once more.
Through the power of her prolific stature, Markle has gained the position of advocate for the United Nations Entity for Empowerment of Women and Gender Equality. She’s also an ambassador for agencies that promote education and development initiatives in Africa and Asia.
It definitely seems like Meghan Markle is going to spend the next few years of her life bettering the world and the people in it, using her education rather than her acting acumen for the better.
