She’s a global trendsetter, spokeswoman for the United Nations and a member of the British Royal family, but does Meghan Markle also boast the ability to speak fluent Spanish?
Meghan Markle does speak Spanish, and quite well. Although it isn’t her native language, it did come as part of her education in the United States, and she pursued it over time, ultimately obtaining the ability to speak it fluently.
Young Influences
Meghan Markle was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, a county with the largest contingent of Spanish speakers in the entire United States of America. As of 2020, almost forty percent of the population of Los Angeles county spoke Spanish at home; it was a key part of the educational curriculum, and totally natural for residents to pick up in their day to day life.
As time went on, Meghan Markle found new avenues to pursue her apparent love for languages, interning for the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when she was just twenty years of age. In a later interview, Meghan explained this is when she acquired the bulk of her ability to speak Spanish, living as she was in a native-speaking country, and wanting to integrate among the natural residents there.
A Tool For The Stage
There have been instances wherein Meghan Markle has called upon her knowledge of the Spanish language to further or supplement her already impressive acting ability. There are videos online that exist of Markle speaking fluent Spanish on the American television show, Suits – one particular example being a bloopers scene taken from later in the show.
You can see the video on Youtube in its entirety – prepare to be wowed by Markle’s command of the Spanish language, even if it mostly was recorded in a joking nature.
While training and getting in shape for Suits, Meghan Markle hired a personal trainer, who helped her boost her fitness level while she lived and filmed in Canada. The trainer – Jorge Blanco – was originally from Zaragoza, Spain, but was also residing in Toronto, Canada at that time. He explained that while they trained, Markle would converse with him in his native Spanish tongue, but with an Argentine accent.
This fact comes as no surprise, considering the majority of Markle’s knowledge of the Spanish languages stems from her time in Argentina itself. Not only does this show Meghan’s ability to speak Spanish with natural, native speakers, but it also shows her caring side – making her trainer feel more uncomfortable by talking to him in his mother tongue.
The Caring Linguist
In late-2018, Meghan Markle visited Brinsworth House, a location that serves as a nursing, or residential home, for aging and retired members of the entertainment and show business industries. While here, she participated in the usual activities you’d expect of a caring person such as her, engaging with the elderly residents and joining them in their various day-to-day activities.
At one point, it was reported that Markle actually engaged in conversation with one resident in fluent Spanish, something which both surprised and impressed the other people in attendance. It’s not every day that an American member of the British Royal family – the first in over a hundred years – will spontaneously erupt into a fluent Spanish conversation.
Meghan Markle truly is an international woman – not only is she a spokeswoman for the United Nations, but she has taken her philanthropic efforts around the world, particularly in India and the East. She’s a staunch advocate for women’s rights and equality, and supports animal activism. It’s doubtless that her ability to converse in the second-most widely spoken language in the world comes in handy on many of these occasions.
