Simon Cowell is a stylish man about town, known for his two outfits of choice; a tight-fitting t-shirt in white or black to go along with a pair of jeans, or his dressier outfit of a half-buttoned up white shirt with black dress pants, sometimes accompanied by a jacket. But something has been different the past couple of years. Does Simon Cowell wear glasses?
Though he originally tried to hide it for years, Simon Cowell does wear glasses, and not just as a fashion statement. After it came about that he wore them, he would be seen sparingly with them, but nowadays he’s comfortable and wears them often.
In the beginning, it seemed that he may have just needed them for reading, but now he is seen wearing them in different settings and situations, so one may conclude that in addition to needing reading glasses, the 60-year-old may be either near or farsighted.
History of Eyeglasses
The first eyeglasses were created in Northern Italy, in the late 1200s, though there are some discrepancies as to who actually invented them. In 1284 a crystal was carved with a strong convex curve to it which replaced a large sphere filled with water used to magnify things.
People realized that putting it up to their eye helped them with their vision, and not just to magnify items, which would help them with many more things than just reading. In 1290 the first set of glasses was built.
In the 1400s when books became even more popular to the masses, so did glasses. Though the look has changed over the years, as has most everything dealing with style, the function is just the same.
Technology has more scientific knowledge has been able to determine that there are multiple reasons for needing eyeglasses, and it’s not a case of one set fits all. Glasses are able to help with multiple ocular conditions.
In most cases, frames do not play a role in the wearer’s condition and are used purely for practical or stylish reasons. This does not include safety glasses that are created with prescriptions.
Nowadays, in addition to eyeglasses, people can correct their vision with contact lenses and even laser eye surgery. The evolution of correcting eyesight has been a strange one.
Once people, especially children, were bullied and ridiculed for needing to wear glasses. Then, at some point glasses became a fashion statement and even those who don’t need them to correct their vision were wearing them to look cool.
Simon’s Style
Simon Cowell enjoys looking nice, and has been called vain, even with his limited wardrobe, so it’s no surprise that he’s been able to make his glasses look stylish. It’s nice to see that he’s embraced his glasses and doesn’t hide them anymore.
Cowell’s clothes may not change much over the year but his sizes have changed. He has lost about 60 pounds since last year so he’s probably had to buy an all-new wardrobe since his shirts continue to be tight. Though, since bein in lockdown he’s lost a bit more since he’s been able to work out more and his shirts are looking a little loose.
With Cowell’s vainness and other options for eye correction, it’s a wonder that he doesn’t wear contacts, or get laser surgery. Though we don’t know the exact condition he has, it’s possible that he doesn’t qualify for either.
Some people have trouble putting contacts in as they can’t bring themselves to touch their eyeballs. This could be another reason that he has chosen glasses over contact lenses. Or, perhaps he has contact lenses on when we see him without his glasses.
With, or without, his glasses, Simon Cowell still looks like a charmer and is able to deliver some quote-worthy quips.
