Australian Export, American Success
Although Nicole Kidman was born in Hawaii, her first nationality is Australian. Her parents were actually studying in the United States at the time of her birth, meaning they would ultimately return to Australia. They did, and Nicole spent the majority of her early life in Sydney.
It was in her earlier years that she discovered her affinity for acting. As a child, she loved the stage. She’d take part in school productions and became inspired by seeing other established actors perform in theatre. Her parents enrolled her in dance and acting classes, nurturing the seemingly innate ability to perform.
As life went on, Nicole Kidman focused heavily on these talents. She attended performing arts schools, dedicating herself to drama and even mime classes. It wouldn’t be long before Kidman found success, though. At just sixteen years of age, she had a bit part in a small, local production.
Later that same year, in 1983, she’d land her first supporting role in a television show. Throughout the remainder of the eighties and the early nineties, Kidman’s performances were limited to Australian productions. Although she appeared alongside some big names, she was yet to attain the Hollywood splendor most actors aim for.
It was also in the nineties that she married her first husband, the legendary Tom Cruise. The pair met in the late eighties and started dating, eventually marrying one another in 1990. Unfortunately, the relationship wasn’t destined to last. In 2001, the pair split, owing to alleged irreconcilable differences.
However, the broken marriage wasn’t going to slow Kidman down at all. She’d already landed some brilliant roles that pushed her career onwards. In 1995, she’d appeared as a prominent character in Batman Forever. Other roles came thick and fast, such as The Portrait of a Lady, and The Peacemaker, with George Clooney. In 2001, she used her musical abilities to star in Moulin Rouge!, an iconic and instantly recognizable musical.
For Moulin Rouge!, Kidman was awarded a prestigious award, a Golden Globe. She also received her first-ever nomination for an Academy Award, for Best Actress no less. In 2003, she secured an Academy Award, once again nominated for Best Actress. You can see the video of Kidman’s acceptance speech below, taken from YouTube.
Here Comes The Money
She’s enjoyed a storied and expansive career, spanning decades. By 2020, Nicole Kidman was worth a reported quarter of a billion dollars. She’s taken home some enormous pay packets over the years, and not all from acting.
Kidman secured an enormous deal with Chanel No. 5 throughout the mid-2000s. At one point, she was reportedly paid an eye-watering $12 million for just three minutes of screen time, in a commercial. She was sky-rocketing up the charts of success, making her way firmly to the top.
At the start of the 1990s, her salary for a movie was reported to be around $200,000. This is true with an appearance in the 1990 movie, Days of Thunder. However, by 1995 this would have increased to $2.5 million, for Batman Forever.
By the turn of the century, Kidman was securing salaries of around $15 million. The movies in which she attained figures like this were Cold Mountain, and The Stepford Wives. Her career earnings peaked in 2005 when she was paid a massive $17.5 million for Bewitched.
At that point, there was no sign of Kidman slowing down. She would go on to consistently star in at least two or three productions every single year, with more being announced through 2020. She’d also seen success on the small screen as well, making sporadic appearances in television shows.
In 2019, Kidman earned a reported $34 million, making her one of the year’s highest-paid actresses. She’s also part of a considerable power couple, having married Keith Urban back in 2006. The country music legend also generated a massive $35 million in earnings through 2019.
