Billie Eilish is unique in many senses of the word, opting to avoid being normal as much as possible. People with a dominant left hand are much less common, but is Billie one of them?
Billie Eilish is not left handed. She uses her right hand for everything from drawing, to holding a microphone. However, it came close to being in her genes, as her close brother is actually left-hand dominant.

Close But Not Quite
Left-handedness is a very rare trait for a person to have – as few as ten to fifteen percent of people in Western countries boast the attribute. There has been some exploration into the science behind ‘handedness’ and it has been determined that it mostly stems from genetics, with influences from a person’s upbringing coming into play.
Billie Eilish’s brother, Finneas O’Connell, is probably the closest person to Billie in her world – the pair have been inseparable since childhood and do everything together: make music, perform on stage and express their inner artistic visions. It’s a well-known fact amongst fans online that Finneas is indeed left-handed, a direct contract against his beloved younger sister. Coincidentally (and somewhat humorously) Finneas has often been referred to as Billie EIlish’s “left-hand man”.
From a social media post on Twitter in 2018, we can assume that Billie and Finneas’ parents are also both right-handed, as Finneas himself goes on to write: “I have lived my entire life as a lefty in a righty’s world but my house is a left handed house and everything is on the left…” This is a direct indicator to growing up surrounded by right-handed people, suggesting he truly is a needle in a haystack with his left-handed ability.
Reflections In Her Art
If you needed any proof as to Billie Eilish’s handedness, look no further than a brilliant video of the young superstar giving her time to draw a ‘self-portrait’ for Noisey, on YouTube. She spends just under nine minutes talking about her love for art – including anime – while drawing a rather demonic, jagged-tooth, snake-tailed impression of herself. She goes on to explain that that’s what she sees ‘on the inside’, how she feels her inner personality looks. While she does all this, she’s sketching away – with her right hand.

One of the key, iconic points about Eilish is her sense of style. It’s deeply unique and changes dramatically on a daily basis, often inspiring – or confusing – fans and critics alike. There has actually been a spontaneous reference to left-handedness in her clothing, as she has been seen, and documented, wearing bright, graffiti-emblazoned clothing bearing the term “left handed alien”.
It’s All In The Brain
While Billie Eilish certainly isn’t left-handed, it’s likely she isn’t left-side brain dominant either. It might not be a well-known fact, but every human has a subconsciously-preferred side of the brain that determines their very nature. If you are left-side dominant, you’ll tend to be more analytical and methodical in your manner of thinking. If you’re right-side dominant however, you’ll be more creative and artistic.
With that in mind, it’s highly likely Billie Eilish is totally right-sided, both by brain and by hand. It doesn’t come as a surprise, as the insanely talented and hyper-creative teenager burst into the music scene and was worth six million dollars by the age of eighteen, all as a result of her artistic nature.
So, while she isn’t unique in being left-handed, she certainly is a one in a million person in many other aspects. It’s not hard to see why she’s gone on file saying she ‘never wanted a normal life’ – it doesn’t seem like she’d actually be capable of normality.
