Bobby Flay, world-famous American celebrity chef and restaurateur, was born in New York City. He graduated from the French Culinary Institute and began his career at a number of restaurants in the city. He has hosted several Food Network television programs, appeared as a guest and guest judge on other Food Network shows, and competed in many Iron Chef competitions. He is known for his Southwestern and Spanish-style food.
Bobby Flay was married three times, first to Debra Ponzek from 1991 to 1993. He then married Kate Connelly in 1995, and they divorced in 1998. In 2005, he married actress Stephanie March, but they divorced in 2015. Flay has not remarried since then.
The celebrity chef’s personal life has shown to be just as dynamic and colorful as his wide-ranging culinary expertise. In this piece we will look at the reality TV personality’s marital history and some other–rumored and otherwise–romantic links reported by the media.
Marriage #1: Debra Ponzek
His first marriage was to fellow chef Debra Ponzek, who he wed in 1991. According to The New York Times, they met when Flay was 26, working in a casual East Village restaurant called Miracle Grill. This was within months of his gaining critical acclaim for Mesa Grill, the Southwestern restaurant that put his name (and food) in the mouths of NYC’s who’s who.
At the time of their meeting, Debra was 29 and already considered one of the most prominent chefs in the city. She was then a chef at Montrachet, a French restaurant in New York City.
Their courtship was short and sweet, with the couple deciding to tie the knot within weeks of being introduced at a Meals-on-Wheels charity event for which they were both working. However, almost as quickly as the couple moved from meeting to getting married, Bobby and Debra didn’t last long as a married couple; they divorced in 1993 after just two years together. According to an interview Ponzek did with The New York Times, the reason for the split seems pretty simple: she wanted him home more often than his (Flay’s) hectic work schedule would allow.
After their divorce in 1993, the ex-couple each moved on to new marriages. Debra married fellow chef Greg Addonizio in 1994, while Bobby moved on with second wife, Kate Connelly.
Marriage #2: Kate Connelly
1994 was the year Flay and his soon-to-be second wife, Kate Connelly, met. They were both working on shows with The Food Network. At the time, Kate was already a single mom to her 9-year-old son Jonathan.
Within months of first meeting at the Robin Leach Talking Food show, the two got engaged and eventually tied the knot in October 1995. The couple shares a biological daughter, Sophie Flay, who joined the family in April 1996. Flay and Connelly divorced in 1998.
Of all the women linked to Bobby, Kate seems to be the most media-shy, only popping up here and there on Sophie’s Instagram profile. According to her Food Network talent profile, Sophie Flay is growing into a media personality herself–she is currently a community journalist for ABC7 in Los Angeles.
Marriage #3: Stephanie March
Fast forward to 2000–two years from the divorce of his second marriage, Bobby Flay is set up on a blind date with an actress who will be his third wife in a few years.
Stephanie March is an actress most known for her role in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. She has also appeared in top TV shows such as 30 Rock and Grey’s Anatomy and box-office hit Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Unlike his two previous marriages, Flay’s engagement this time around lasted nearly two years before finally tying the knot in February 2005. He proposed to Stephanie on an ice-skating date in Rockefeller Center just before Christmas of 2003.
While their marriage lasted longer compared to Flay’s two previous ones, it still ended in divorce (and a highly-publicized one at that). Rumors of infidelity and alimony issues hounded the union, which finally ended in 2015.
Has Bobby Flay Re-Married Since?
Bobby Flay, married and divorced three times by 2015, has not remarried since. However, that doesn’t mean that the celebrity chef’s romantic life became inactive after his marriages–Flay was rumored to have dated several women over the years, including high-profile names such as Giada De Laurentiis, January Jones, and Heléne Yorke. According to Mashed, Flay has not been linked to anyone new since breaking up with Heléne Yorke in 2019.
