Johnny Depp is an animal lover—but is he vegan too? If you’ve seen Pirates of the Caribbean you’ll remember that Johnny Depp’s character was obsessed with rum. We know about some of his drinking preferences but what about his eating preferences?
Johnny Depp has reportedly been vegan a few times over the past several years, but whether that’s currently the case is up in the air. Depp is one of the world’s most lovable actors—and his love for animals has been apparent in several ways. However, he’s a private guy and his current dietary practices are under wraps.
Vegan Throughout the Years
Johnny Depp has experienced many periods of veganism throughout the years. For different reasons—be it acting roles or girlfriends—Johnny Depp has decided to say ‘no’ to meat and dairy. In 2011, while preparing for his role as a vampire in Dark Shadows, Depp reportedly changed his diet quite significantly.
Required to drop to a weight of 140 pounds, Johnny Depp reportedly gave up one of his favorite meals, fried chicken. To shed those extra pounds, Depp spent several months living off a diet of low-fructose fruit and green tea. He may have done this unintentionally, but his veganism helped him transform into that bony vampire Barnabas Collins!
Just a few years later, in 2013 Depp reportedly ditched the meat and dairy in preparation for the big 5-0. According to PETA, rumors had it that Johnny decided to go vegan for his 50th birthday and was “raving about losing his paunch.”
Rumors, neither confirmed nor denied, had it that Depp was trying to look even sexier by making a few adjustments to his lifestyle. Aiming to please then-girlfriend Amber Heard, Johnny began incorporating pilates into his daily life. Not only that, but he gave up alcohol, too. Even better for the vegans around the world, Depp also started eating a plant-based diet!
A Deep Love for Animals
Anyone who’s followed Johnny Depp and his career over the years can remember his infamous incident with his two dogs. The ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ and his love for his precious pups made headlines in 2015 after Depp attempted to have his two Yorkshire terriers join him while he was filming Pirates of the Caribbean V in Australia.
Depp appeared to have snuck his two dogs, Pistol and Boo, across borders—much to the disapproval of Australia’s Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce. Claimed to have knowingly smuggled the dogs into Australia, the government official threatened to have them euthanized if Depp didn’t immediately return them to his home in California.
In the end, Depp did follow orders to return Pistol and Boo to American borders, but his love for dogs (and all animals!) still stands strong. Following the incident with Pistol and Boo, Depp sponsored a premature bat, and named it Jackie Sparrow in his honor. His $1,000 sponsorship helped to support the Australian Bat Clinic and Wildlife Trauma Centre.
Johnny Depp and his love for animals can be summarized in a quote from him that has become very popular, especially within animal welfare and vegan fans, “if you don’t like seeing pictures of violence towards animals being posted, you need to help stop the violence, not the pictures.”
Is He Vegan Now?
So, we can see that Johnny Depp has had a few periods of veganism in recent years. Many people are wondering if he’s currently vegan and it appears that no one really knows. Depp has been involved in a lot of drama—including a very messy divorce from Amber Heard, the girlfriend and then wife Depp decided to eat a plant-based diet to impress.
The couple has been in an ongoing domestic abuse case over the past few years. As could be expected when dealing with a difficult situation like this, Depp has been relatively quiet recently and no one really knows what he’s up to. So, is he a vegan now? No one really knows. We know that he has a deep love and respect for animals, but he definitely won’t be trying to impress Amber Heard anytime soon.
