Kelly Clarkson has been very open about her love of food as well as the plant-based diet that helped her lose weight. She eats lots of vegetables, but is the singer completely vegan?
Kelly Clarkson is not vegan. She briefly went vegetarian in the past, but now she appears to eat meat as well as plenty of vegetables.
Kelly Clarkson Lost Weight on the Plant Paradox Diet
The media was abuzz when Kelly lost nearly 40 pounds in late 2019. Her secret? A new plant-based diet called The Plant Paradox Diet, pioneered by Dr. Steven Gundry.
The diet specifically eliminates lectins, a type of proteins found in many processed foods and non-organic meats. Dr. Gundry explains that these lectins can cause inflammation and health issues.
The diet entails cutting out refined grains, legumes, certain vegetables, chicken, eggs, and cheese. Kelly was still able to eat leafy greens, fish, seasonal berries, and organic meat.
The diet is plant-based so it emphasizes eating healthy vegetables as the center of each meal. Although some meat is allowed, it is unclear if Kelly ate meat while following this diet or not.
Kelly was quick to squash any rumors that she was taking strange pills or following complex diets to lose weight. She came forward and said that on the Plant Paradox diet she still ate most of the same foods she normally does.
Kelly also explained that weight loss was not her goal. She chose to follow the Plant Paradox diet for better health and was able to stop taking her thyroid medication as a result.
Kelly’s diet emphasized eating whole, fresh vegetables so it was likely that many of her meals were vegetarian. However, the diet allows meat so she may have occasionally eaten some organic, grass-fed meat.
Kelly’s Favorite Foods
During a tour of her set for The Kelly Clarkson Show, Kelly took the camera backstage to their catering room. Kelly showed the snacks and joked that she had to eat a Twizzler to make sure they were high quality for her crew.
Kelly also pointed out the M&Ms and laughed about the tiny package they come in, saying she would take two containers rather than stop at one. Kelly revealed that she loves M&Ms, which actually are not vegetarian.
Most people do not know this, but M&Ms’ manufacturers have explained that they use traces of animal products in their candies. The beloved chocolate treats are not vegetarian, and it seems likely that Kelly herself is not vegetarian in 2020.
Aside from her love of Twizzlers and M&Ms, Kelly also revealed which backstage foods are her favorite: carrots! The singer said she loves having this vegetable backstage because it will not stick to her teeth like Twizzlers do.
Vegetarian Rumors about Kelly
Fans may wonder if Kelly is vegan because of the many articles discussing her plant-based diet, as well as online rumors about her being a vegetarian. Some websites are misleading and claim that Kelly has been vegetarian since 2008.
Kelly herself cleared up any confusion on her personal blog in 2008. On December 1st 2008 she posted that she had not eaten meat “in over a year” but decided to indulge and eat turkey with her family.
Bravo’s Top Chef team may have heard about Kelly’s vegetarian past, because they planned a vegetarian episode when they invited Kelly to guest judge in 2020. Kelly surprised the chef contestants by joining the show to review their meals.
The Top Chef contestants cooked entirely vegetarian meals for Kelly. It is not clear if they did this because they thought Kelly was vegetarian, or the producers simply wanted to challenge the participants to cook a vegetarian meal.
Kelly Eats Meat
Any lingering vegetarian rumors about Kelly were dispelled when the star made a guest appearance on Trisha Yearwood’s cooking show, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen. Kelly helped Trisha cook stuffed pork chops.
The singers cooked and ate their non-vegetarian meal together, and even sang a duet after they enjoyed their dinner. Although Kelly was a vegetarian in the past, she now enjoys a variety of foods including meat.
