V, whose real name is Kim Taehyung, is beloved and a bit of an enigma. He signs autographs with his right hand but he’s constantly using his left hand for other activities.
V (Kim Taehyung) is ambidextrous meaning he uses both his right and left hands equally, however, he was born left-handed. While he still says he is left-handed, he has trained his right hand so that he is equally dominant in both hands.
Scroll down to read more about how V was able to train his right hand and how fans discovered he was born a lefty.
V Trained His Right Hand
Kim Taehyung has come out and said that he is left-handed on multiple occasions and the other members of BTS have said the same thing about him. However, he uses his right hand for tons of different activities, including signing autographs which is a clear sign that he is ambidextrous.
Ambidextrous is when you use both your left and right hand equally for activities and both are considered your dominant hand. So if V was born left-handed, how is he now ambidextrous?
Well, he would have had to train his right hand to be just as dominant as his left hand. It’s not all that common to do this type of training these days but it isn’t unheard of.
It was very common for left-handed people to be forced to write and use their right hand dominantly for centuries. This is because the left hand was associated with the devil and using it dominantly was thought to be demonic.
So tons of lefties had to learn how to use their right hand to avoid ridicule. This went on until maybe the last century when the use of the left hand was dissociated with evil. That’s in western countries though.
In Asian countries like V’s home of Korea, there is still some stigma surrounding the use of the left hand. It’s actually considered rude to give or receive an object with your left hand.
Countries like China, India, and Indonesia still have a huge bias against using the left hand dominantly. While between four and five percent of Korea’s population is left-handed, less than one percent is in China. As this article puts it, the Chinese have a sense of identity associated with left-handedness and believe that no Chinese person is left-handed.
In Korea, only about one percent of people use their left hand for writing and it could be because of a bias. This could have been one of the reasons why Kim Taehyung has trained his right hand to be as dominant as his left.
Another reason could have to do with his intelligence level. A lot of fans argue that he is a genius. Using and training your non-dominant hand has been linked to maintaining a sharp brain.
While many have tried to argue that training your non-dominant hand will make you smarter, there is no scientific evidence to back up this claim.
You can watch the below YouTube video that highlights a lot of the times that V has used his left hand instead of his right.
How Fans Discovered V Was Left-Handed
Even though V is ambidextrous today, there have been a few times when it was revealed that he was born left-handed. That’s despite the fact that he uses his right hand for things like signing autographs and playing sports.
Some have even said that he uses his left hand to sign autographs as there was a video that BTS posted of V signing autographs while listening to Justin Bieber’s song ‘Intentions’. However, after watching the video it’s clear that he is using his right hand because the camera is set to the selfie setting. We can tell that it’s on that setting because of the way the words on his t-shirt appear in the video.
Despite that mix-up, V has posted to Twitter via the BTS account that he is left-handed. There have also been a few times when members have pointed out that he is left-handed. One time while the group was playing Badminton during an appearance members were quick to point out V is left-handed.
In another appearance where V was holding a teapot, he said that he is left-handed. So it is really no secret that the most well-liked K-Pop star in the world was born left-handed.
And, even though he will say that he is left-handed it is clear that he is actually ambidextrous these days and must have put work in at some point to make his right hand more dominant.
