Early Life
Gwen Renee Stefani was born in Fullerton, California on October 3, 1969. Her father was a marketing executive for Yamaha and her mother was an accountant and housewife.
Gwen has two younger siblings and an older brother who was also a musician before he left that career behind to pursue a job as an animator.
Stefani has said she was a normal teen who did many of the things that other youths in Southern California did. She was very interested in music from a young age, loved many bands, and was drawn to the idea of performing music for others.
No Doubt
Gwen’s brother, Eric, was forming a ska band called No Doubt in the mid-1980s. In 1986, he invited Gwen to provide vocals for the group.
The group was later signed to Interscope Records and released their first album in 1992 but the record failed to break through and find success.
The band would release a second album to some critical praise and a bit more sales but it still wasn’t the major hit they had hoped for.
No Doubt spent three years making their third album, Tragic Kingdom. The album was released in 1995 and became a major smash.
Tragic Kingdom was nominated for a Grammy and sold over 16 million copies worldwide. It spawned five singles including the hits “Don’t Speak” and “Spiderwebs”.
The success of Tragic Kingdom made No Doubt one of the biggest bands in the world and sent them on a massive global tour that lasted two-and-a-half years.
Following their runaway smash, No Doubt worked on another album. They released Return of Saturn in 2000 and followed that up with Rock Steady in 2001.
The band’s sound was transforming to include more dancehall and reggae sounds. Stefani’s lyrics as well changed as she began to focus on a solo career.
On Her Own
Gwen Stefani released her first solo album, Love.Angel.Music.Baby., on November 12, 2004. The album marked a grand departure from her previous work with No Doubt and was inspired by the music of New Order, OutKast, and more.
The album debuted at number seven on the charts and sold 309,000 copies in its first week. It achieved multi-platinum status all over the world. The reviews were mixed with some saying it was a confused and muddled attempt at too many different sounds.
The album had many hit singles. The song “Rich Girl” was the first US music download to sell over a million copies.
During this time in her career, Stefani also branched out into the world of acting and had a small part in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, portraying actress Jean Harlow alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.
Fashion Line
Stefani launched a clothing line titled L.A.M.B. in 2004. The clothing line takes influence from her fashion on stage as well as Japanese and Jamaican styles.
Stefani has long been praised for her look and style and the way she takes care of her body and figure.
The L.A.M.B. clothing line was immediately successful and later had a spin-off brand called Harajuku Lovers, a merchandise line featuring undergarments, accessories, and non-clothing items heavily influenced by Japanese fashion.
