With his climate change crusading and award winning films on the impacts of eating meats, you would expect that this Hollywood star was a devout vegan.
Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t a vegan. He’s been extremely cryptic and secretive with his diet and eating habits, leading many people to believe that Leo lives by a “Do as I say, not as I do policy” and continues to eat meat although he preaches the wonders of veganism.
Read more below to see how contradictory Leo really is when it comes to his food choices.
A Vegetarian Crusader
Although the Academy Award winner has always been an advocate for the environment and animal rights, it’s not clear if Leo was ever a vegan or continues to be one.
He was definitely a vegetarian at one point, even convincing fellow Hollywood star, Gwyneth Paltrow, to never eat red meat again.
DiCaprio praised the Hollywood Foreign Press Association during the 2020 Golden Globes for their daring choice to have an all-vegan menu.
Along with many sustainable and vegan investments, as well as much work on environmentally conscious and arousing documentaries, there is still speculation of whether world-famous activist Leonardo DiCaprio is a vegan.
True Veganism
Although he has emphasized the importance of having an environmental consciousness as well as the effects that animal consumption has on the ozone layer, Leo was rumored to have been eating a juicy steak, while dining with Toby Maguire, a fellow “vegan”.
Although he produced the vegan documentary Cowspiracy, which discouraged the consumption of cow meat, some say that he could not possibly be a vegan because he loves the taste of animal products too much.
Is it red meat that scares Leo away, or all animal products in general?
Although Leo is very vocal about environmental issues, there are other celebrities who aren’t as serious when it comes to the environment. For example, Zac Efron, and yet he’s been easily confirmed to be a vegan.
Why won’t Leo just come out and say what the world has been wanting to hear?
Although there are many negative comments about DiCaprio’s food habits, one man comes to his rescue.
The musician Moby calls his pal Leo a ‘Bold Faced Vegan.’ Do we trust Moby, or many animal rights activists who claim Leo is not who he says he is?
Below, you can watch many vegans talk of the evidence they think disproves Leo’s veganism.
DiCaprio’s Vegan Investments
Recently, Leonardo DiCaprio has invested in Beyond Meats, a vegan meat brand that looks and tastes just like real beef. In the past, he has also funneled money into brands such as Hippeas, a healthy and vegan puffed chickpea snack, as well as in the non-vegan company LovetheWild.
Is Leo an earth-conscious, tree-hugging vegan, or just a confused poser trying to fit in with Hollywood’s latest trends?
LovetheWild is a sustainable seafood company, but fish is an animal product far from being vegan.
Maybe Leo cares about promoting sustainability across the world and understands the impact of eating sustainably but is unable to make the commitment to the lifestyle of veganism.
Perhaps Leo believes that eating mostly plant-based is good for the environment, but that we should also take advantage of the miles of grazable farmland best for cattle in the west.
He focuses more on sustainability and maintaining the balance of the ecosystem more than the rigidity of a vegan lifestyle.
Hypocrite or Activist?
Maybe it is true, Leo’s vegan story has been a lie all along. It’s not very hard to be a vegetarian like Leo was in the 90s, after all, it’s just a diet.
However, what is challenging about veganism is its lifestyle change.
Perhaps Leo is unable to give up his favorite leather Birkenstocks or he just can’t give up the pleasure of eating a big, juicy steak.
Maybe it’s been twisted by the media: Leo is a very private man, he may just not want to share the intimate details of his life to the public.
He did in fact praise the HFPA for their vegan meal choice at the 2020 Golden Globes and he comes in contact with lots of vegan activists, actors, and celebrities.
Leonardo DiCaprio has had a large impact on environmental activism and has even spoken in front of the UN to inform the world of the risk of climate change.
Despite rumors and gossip, it is almost safe to say that Leo’s unending dedication to protecting our planet has led him down the vegan path.
He even promotes it in an Instagram post with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Will Smith.
