Oprah Winfrey, Prince William, Barrack Obama, Bill Gates, and Leonardo DaVinci. All of these people have one thing in common. They are all tops in their fields, there’s no doubt about that, but they are also all left-handed. Is Gordon Ramsay left-handed?
Gordon Ramsay is left-handed. Only 12% of the world’s population is left-handed, but Ramsay is not the only left-handed chef in the kitchen. Curtis Stone, Anna Olson, and others are also celebrity left-handed chefs.
The brain is a wonderous and complicated thing. You may be wondering why we’re talking about the brain when we’re here to talk about which hand Gordon Ramsay writes with. Well, it all starts with the brain. Right-handed people are usually left-brained, and vice versa, left-handed people are generally right-brained. So, what does this mean? And where does Gordon Ramsay fit in?
Right Brain Left Brain
We know that the brain is split into two hemispheres. Though they look a lot alike, they aren’t the same, nor are they independent of each other. We told you the brain was complicated, but it’s also fascinating.
It is generally accepted that right-brained people, those who are left-handed, tend to have better imaginations, intuition, rhythm, daydreaming, and other areas. They also tend to be better in the Arts, with things like painting, dancing, sculpting, etc.
In addition, left-brained people, those who are right-handed, are accepted to have more linear thinking, are good at math and sequencing, and need facts and logic. This often tends to be your scientists and engineers, folks who live by rules and may not be as flexible.
In reality, however, only a third of people with a more developed right brain are actually left-handed. While it is still generally thought that right-handed people use their left, analytical brain and left-handed people use their right, artistic brain, there is a lot of overlap.
But, going by longtime beliefs, Gordon Ramsay’s cooking would definitely come from using his artistic right-brain, as would his intuition when it comes to business, so it makes sense that he would be left-handed.
Left-Handed Statistics
There are many scientific and interesting facts about left-handers, from the fact that there is an actual phobia, sinistrophobia, of people who are left-handed to the fact that left-handed men make 15% more than their right-handed counterparts.
Many left-handed people have had to adapt to a right-handed world. Only 50% of left-handers claim to use a computer mouse with their left hand. Using items like scissors and can openers that were made for right-handed people could be one of the reasons that, on average, left-handed people tend to live 9 years less than right-handed people.
Some more bad news for lefties; they’re more apt to develop problems with alcohol, PTSD, and psychosis. But it’s not all bad news! They have their own day, August 13th, they tend to recover quicker from strokes, and they’re able to multi-task better than righties. Gordon Ramsay is living proof of that last one, he’s able to do many different things in the kitchen all at the same time.
Advantage or Disadvantage?
I’m not sure if there is an advantage of being one over the other, and science isn’t really sure either. There always seems to be contradictory reports coming out disproving handedness hypothesis. I, myself, am part of the 1% of the population who are ambidextrous, and part of the 99% who can’t spell it. I like to think I take all the good parts from each side, but even if I did, I don’t think it makes that much of a difference.
Anyone who has watched Gordon Ramsay cooking on any of his shows might not be able to tell at first glance what hand he uses as he often does tasks with both. There’s no doubt that he’s left-handed, just like there’s no doubt that he’s very entertaining to watch.
