Emma Watson has appeared in a musical, Beauty and the Beast, and seems to be able to pick up any task she puts her mind to. But can the actress who played Hermione Granger play piano?
It’s thought that Emma Watson cannot play the piano. There is a scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows where Hermione is teaching Ron how to play. In the scene, Watson is said to have actually played, while Rupert Grint (Ron) did not. Other than the piano, Emma was given an impromptu guitar lesson from fellow Harry Potter star, Tom Felton.
You can read more below about the Deathly Hallows scene, Watson taking a guitar lesson from Felton, and what HP actors can play an instrument.
Emma Watson Plays in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
In the first installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, there is a scene that involves Hermione Granger attempting to teach Ron Weasley how to play piano. This is while they and Harry Potter are hiding out at Sirius Black’s old home, 12 Grimmauld Place.
In the scene, Ron fumbles loudly over the note of Für Elise by Ludwig van Beethoven. Hermione stops Ron from continuing to tell him to play softer, she then reaches over to softly play the notes. After showing Ron how to play, he takes it up again and, of course, continues to loudly fumble over the notes. For this scene, apparently Emma Watson actually plays the Beethoven song on the piano.

Felton Teaches Her to Play Guitar
While Emma Watson doesn’t play any instruments, she has dabbled in playing a few. In fact, in August of 2019, she got an impromptu guitar lesson from her close friend and Harry Potter alumnus, Tom Felton. This happened in South Africa where the two were hanging out on vacation. Felton posted this picture to his Instagram with the caption “Quick learner x.”
Ironically enough, Felton played Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s school nemesis, Draco Malfoy. Despite playing such a spiteful character in the film series, Felton appears to be a pretty chilled out guy in real life. His Instagram is a compilation of pictures and videos of him playing guitar, golf, or with his dog.
Since the Harry Potter films, he has worked on multiple films and is currently a show regular on Origin. He also recorded and released an EP. With his good looks and bad boy charm, it should come as no surprise that he was also Watson’s childhood crush.
In 2011, Watson even told Seventeen magazine this about Tom Felton: “He was my first crush. He totally knows. We talked about it — we still laugh about it. We are really good friends now, and that’s cool.”
Musician Actors from Harry Potter
While Emma is no musician, there are plenty of Harry Potter actors who can play instruments. As we just mentioned above, Tom Felton is a guitarist and has even written, recorded, and performed his own music in concert.
Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe can also play a musical instrument. Radcliffe can play the bass guitar. He was actually taught how to play the rift from The Beatles’ song Come Together by fellow HP actor, Gary Oldman. Oldman played the role of Sirius Black.
Grint has gotten a bit more experimental with his musical instrument tastes. In 2014, he told The Borneo Post “I can play the didgeridoo fairly well. I’ve tried a variety of instruments in the past – accordion, sax, guitar, and never really clicked with any of them. But with the didgeridoo, I can make pretty decent noise.”
While Watson isn’t instrumentally inclined, she has many other talents and a boat load of friends who are always willing to teach her how to play something new.
