In the Harry Potter book series, Hermione Granger was known for having really big teeth. Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the films, seems to have regular teeth, but does she wear dentures?
Emma Watson does not wear dentures anymore. During the filming of Harry Potter, some of Watson’s baby teeth fell out. This was because she was only nine years old when she was cast as Hermione; her adult teeth had yet to come in. Since the filming crew didn’t want her character to have missing teeth, Watson had to wear dentures.
You can read more below about Emma Watson’s dentures on the set of Harry Potter, the false teeth she wore to look like Hermione, and other dental work she has had done.
Emma Watson Puts on False Pearly Whites
As it happens to everyone when they grow through adolescence, Emma Watson’s baby teeth fell out. Nevertheless, there is a slight difference between Watson losing her baby teeth and almost anyone else losing theirs. That would be because she was cast in a major film franchise at the time. Since Hermione Granger was never missing teeth, the film crew decided to have Watson wear dentures during filming to cover up the gaps in her teeth.
Hermione’s Big Teeth
Did you know that in the very first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Hermione Granger was described as having “lots of bushy brown hair, and rather large front teeth.” Emma Watson didn’t have large front teeth, but at one point the director of the film adaptation decided to try something out.
Chris Columbus, the director of the first three Harry Potter films in the series, wanted to give Hermione the big tooth look from the books. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly’s Binge podcast, he talks about the attempt to give Watson the same look as Hermione.
“The thing we shot on the first day of Sorcerer’s Stone was the final train sequence where Harry looks at Hogwarts and Emma, Dan [Radcliffe], and Rupert [Grint] are huddled outside of the train. It was a big thing in the books about [Hermione’s] teeth. She sort of had an overbite, so [Emma’s] wearing fake teeth in that scene. And I realized that she’s never going to be able to perform with these huge fake teeth in her mouth for the rest of the movie. So if you look closely, you can see some fake teeth.”
Some other parts about Hermione’s teeth were left out of the films too. In the fourth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hermione actually has her teeth shrunk to a normal size. This is because Draco Malfoy hexes her so that her teeth grow to an inhuman size. When visiting Madame Pomfrey to have the hex removed, Hermione also has her teeth shrunk down to a size smaller than they were before.

Emma Watson’s Other Dental Work
It looks like Emma Watson has really been through the works when it comes to teeth. On top of all of the dentures she has had to wear, Watson has also had braces and intense teeth whitening done.
In fact, her dental clinic has even commented on how she wore her braces. The website of Elleven Dental Wellness states “Between filming of Harry Potter, Emma Watson had dental braces fitted to her teeth, which she wore for four months. As a megastar and model, having straight teeth was important to her, both for her profession and her confidence.”
Looking at Emma Watson’s teeth now, they are almost enviable with their straight alignment and pearly white appearance. Hopefully, she won’t need dentures again for a very long time, if ever.
