Canadian-American actor, Jim Carrey is one of four children born to his parents Percy and Kathleen Carrey on January 17, 1962.
Jim Carrey is the youngest child in his family consisting of two boys and two girls. He is not a twin; instead, he has an older brother in addition to two older sisters.
The acclaimed actor and painter is brother to Rita Carrey, John Carrey, and Patricia Carrey Fournier.
Family Ancestry
The Carrey family is of mixed heritage. Jim Carrey’s mother is of Irish and Scottish descent and his father is of French-Canadian extraction. Their original surname Carré originated from Bretagne, France.
They also have a blend of German, English, and Swiss roots.
Family Ties
Jim’s parents Kathleen and Percy Carrey raised their family in the Newmarket suburb of Toronto. His mother was a homemaker and his father, a musician and accountant.
Eldest sister, Patricia is the firstborn, arriving in September 1948, older brother, John followed 11 years later in 1959. Sister, Rita and Jim are closer in age as she is only two years older than him. She was born in 1960 and Jim shortly followed in 1962.
Rita is a former Canadian media personality and singer who has put out some Christmas albums. She now manages a Christmas store in Niagara Falls.
The siblings frequently spend the Christmas holidays together in Canada as Jim “loves the snow.”
Family Tragedy
The Carrey family has suffered its fair share of heartache. Jim Carrey lost both his parents at relatively young ages within three years of each other. His father passed away at 67, while his mother died at age 63.
His mother, Kathleen predeceased his father as a result of renal failure. Percy followed after suffering from Alzheimer’s and a bout with lung cancer.
Jim’s most recent family loss was of his older brother John who died at age 60 after a battle with leukemia on December 1, 2019.
