Demi Lovato is a pop superstar with six studio albums under her belt and a slew of hit singles. However, given today’s pop music scene, many people might be wondering if Demi Lovato’s sound is all the help of auto-tune or if she can actually sing.
Demi Lovato can actually sing. Lovato grew up in the entertainment industry and took music and voice lessons from a young age, setting the stage for her success as a pop star.
Read more below about Demi Lovato’s career as a child star and her rise to teen pop sensation.
Musical Roots and Childhood Stardom
Demi Lovato was born in the early 1990s to a family of performers. Her mom, Dianna De La Garza, is a former NFL cheerleader and her father, Patrick Lovato, performed as a musician outside of his job as an engineer.
Lovato began taking musical lessons and before her tenth birthday. Though music was one of Demi’s first passions, she actually began her career when she was cast on Barney and Friends.
For two years, Demi played the role of Angela on the hit children’s television show, which allowed her to display both her acting and musical skills. While on the show, Lovato starred alongside former BFF and fellow Disney alum, Selena Gomez.
Disney Channel Chanteuse
Once Barney and Friends wrapped, Demi quickly found herself starring in several Disney Channel shows and made-for-tv movies. Projects like Camp Rock and Sonny with a Chance gave Demi Lovato ample opportunities to show off her singing skills, with their plots revolving around music or the entertainment industry.
It was during her tenure on the Disney Channel that Demi Lovato signed with Hollywood Records and began recording her first studio album. She was asked to sing live for label execs and her talent shocked the group, with Hollywood Records senior vice president, Bob Cavallo, saying, “Our jaws just dropped.”

Hollywood Records and Pop Superstardom
Demi Lovato’s first studio album, Don’t Forget, was released in the fall of 2008. The album received favorable reviews and given Lovato’s built-in fan base from the Disney Channel and the fact that her album was co-written and produced by The Jonas Brothers, Demi’s album snagged the number two spot on the Billboard charts.
Less than a year later, Demi Lovato’s sophomore album, Here We Go Again, was released, with it landing at the top of the charts and outperforming her first studio album. Following the release, Lovato embarked on The Jonas Brothers’ world tour, where she promoted the record.
In the year that followed, Demi Lovato had professional highs, but personal lows. At one point she was fired from touring with The Jonas Brothers when she punched a backup dancer.
Years of being overworked, all while dealing with an eating disorder and emotional issues, prompted Lovato’s management to step in and demand the star seek treatment.
2020 and Future Albums
Despite the personal setbacks, Lovato was not deterred by remaining in the music business. She has released four more studio albums, spawning numerous hit singles and becoming a modern-day pop superstar. Not only that, but the star has plans for a seventh studio album, which she hopes to release in 2020.
Lovato promises fans that her new music will be a confessional, telling Harpar’s Bazaar “I’ve kept my mouth shut, while the tabloids have run wild. And my album is finally the place where I get to set the record straight on everything.” Elaborating on her latest personal issues, Lovato also said, “I would hate for a detail to become the headline when I’ve worked so hard for my music.”
Regardless of the personal issues Demi Lovato has faced, it’s clear she’s a dedicated performer who has the talent to back it up. Though there aren’t yet samples of her new music out there, it’s clear that fans can expect new music from Lovato soon.
