Demi Lovato is one of the world’s most famous pop singers, with a slew of top hits and six studio albums during her career. However, given the nature of pop music in general, where singers often have a team of songwriters and musicians working for them, fans might be wondering if Demi Lovato can play piano.
Demi Lovato can play the piano. Lovato grew up in the entertainment industry and learned to play piano at a young age, long before she was ever a household name.
Read more below about Demi Lovato’s childhood, learning to play piano and whether or not she plays any other instruments.
Musical Beginnings
Demi Lovato was born in 1992 and raised in Dallas, Texas. From a young age, Lovato showed talent as a performer and she began taking piano lessons early on, noting, “ I’ve been playing piano since I was 7. I used to play by ear, then I started playing classical with a teacher.”
Despite her musical inclinations, Lovato would first become famous as an actress. Cast as Angela in the children’s show, Barney and Friends, Demi had a main role on the show for two years.
Piano Playing for the Disney Channel
Just a few years later, Demi Lovato would go on to fame on the Disney Channel, starring in the made-for-tv movie, Camp Rock, alongside Joe Jonas. Lovato played Mitchie Torres, a girl working to pay her dues for a rock summer camp, and the role allowed her to show off both her piano and singing skills.
Though her piano playing was not the skill that clinched the role of Mitchie, Lovato’s vocal talents left Disney execs in awe. Hollywood Records senior vice president, Bob Cavallo, recalls “Our jaws just dropped.”
Demi Lovato did not mind being put on the spot with the unexpected vocal audition, telling Reuters, “They kind of put me on the spot. I don’t mind it. When people put me on the spot, it’s kind of like, ‘Hey, I’m not going to get nervous. I’m just going to do what I do.’ So I did what I did.”

Record Deals and Recordings
As Lovato’s star power began to rise, she was offered a record deal with Hollywood Records. Her first studio album, Don’t Forget, was released in 2008. Lovato co-wrote many of the songs with The Jonas Brothers and record producer, John Fields.
Not only did Lovato sing and co-write the album, but she also played the piano for two of the songs. Track listings show Lovato listed on piano, giving her ample opportunity to show off her multi-talented skills as a singer and a musician.
Lovato would go on to release five more albums, becoming a pop sensation in that time. She has been credited with playing piano or guitar on several of her albums, and routinely plays instruments during her concerts.
Future Album Plans
Though Demi Lovato is oftentimes more famous for her high-profile relationships and personal drama, it still cannot outshine the megawatt talent the sultry chanteuse has. From acting, to singing and playing musical instruments, it’s clear Lovato has a bright future ahead of her.
Lovato is set to have a new album out in 2020, and the singer claims it’s going to be very personal, saying, “You know what’s great about making an album? You get to say anything you want, be as open and honest as possible and finally tell your side of the story regardless of who might not like it.”
It’s clear from the post that the songstress has gone to great lengths to make this album as personal as possible, and though there is no word yet as to whether or not Lovato will be playing instruments on the album, there is definitely a chance she will, given her involvement in past albums. Fans will just have to wait and see when the album drops later this year.
